Quick Notes: Shiner, Times New Viking, The Afghan Whigs

*[] Intimate live footage from one of Shiner‘s recent reunion shows at the Bottom Lounge in Chicago, IL can be found below:

SHINER - Reunion : Bottom Lounge. from GONZO CHICAGO on Vimeo.

*[] Ohio lo-fi noise pop trio Times New Viking sure do like to label-hop. They moved from Matador to Merge Records for 2011′s Dancer Equired, and now they’re returning home to Siltbreeze, the label that released their 2005 debut, Dig Yourself. The partnership has been renewed for the release of the band’s new EP, Over & Over, due out October 16th.

The EP comprises six tracks and is the result of a “modest” creative flux. As for the sound, Over & Over “tempers the primal panic-punk of their salad days and fuses it with the sustained, keen pop skill found within their later catalog.” Check out the tracklist below to see what names they’ve given this new temperament.

Over & Over Track List:

01. Sleep-in
02. Telephone Wires
03. Y2K2
04. Future with Girls
05. Middle Class Drags
06. At The Bar0s

*[] While fans are enjoying the Afghan Whigs reunion, mainman Greg Dulli says he has no idea whether the reunited band will keep going after their current U.S. tour wraps in November. "The group is a going concern as it's going," Dulli tells Billboard. "I am being utterly honest when I tell you we haven't really talked about anything other than what we're doing right now. It's kind of cool that it's happened that way because it's very much in the moment, and appreciating the moment is something that sometimes gets lost in everyday life. Everything that's happening now is happening in its own inimitable, organic way. So right now I'm surfing this wave. If the way continues on I'll know it, and if it's time to hop off the wave, I'll know that, too. But I don't know the answer yet." He added that the band has "recorded a couple more things. We'll see if they pop out at an appropriate time."

Deftones Title Album "Koi No Yokan" + Announce Tour Dates

[press release] Deftones have announced the November 13th release of their seventh studio album, entitled KOI NO YOKAN. To support the release they will hit the road on a nationwide headlining tour, with special guest Scars On Broadway, which kicks off October 9th in Ventura, CA and will conclude on the West Coast mid November. Tickets on sale next Friday, September 7 via

KOI NO YOKAN was recorded in Los Angeles, CA with Nick Raskulinecz (Alice In Chains, Foo Fighters, Rush) who also produced Diamond Eyes. Frontman Chino Moreno summed up Deftones‘ sound in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, saying “Obviously we’re an aggressive band – not the heaviest, but there’s a lot of attack. He continues, “But there’s also this lush beauty that flows within everything that we do, and that’s my favorite part of the band. To me, it’s the epitome of what the Deftones do.”

From their 1994 debut Adrenaline to their platinum-certified, Billboard chart-topping, Grammy-winning breakthrough album White Pony, Deftones have continually crossed-over genres, defied categorization and delivered compelling live performances around the world. The Sacramento band’s 2010 release Diamond Eyes was named iTunes’ “Rock Album of the Year,” as well as KERRANG!’s 2010 Album of the Year. Diamond Eyes also graced many other critics and readers “Best Of” lists, including MySpace, AOL Noisecreep, Alternative Press, MOG, and Drowned In Sound.

Ringo Deathstarr Premiere "Rip" Video + More

[press release] Noisey has premiered the official video for Ringo Deathstarr’s new single “Rip” today. “Rip” is the first offering from the Austin, Texas trio’s forthcoming album Mauve (to be released in North America by Sonic Unyon on Sept 25th). The song is equally distorted and dreamy with bassist Alex Gehring handling vocals. The visuals for the song reflect this with Gehring, Elliott Frazier (guitar/vocals) and Daniel Coborn (drums) taking a Technicolor trip (replete with trails) with the help of some 3-D glasses from their cereal box. Watch the new video for “Rip” below.

Speaking on the creation of the song, Frazier recounts “Rip’ was the sixteenth and last song we recorded (for Mauve). Alex gave me a demo of herself singing the melody on an unplugged electric guitar. Without the drums, it could have been a Beat Happening song, but I was inspired and played drums on the track. It was created pretty organically and there was never any forethought that it would be the first single.”

Self-produced in Austin and Los Angeles, Mauve follows Ringo Deathstarr’s highly received 2011 LP, Colour Trip. Colour Trip, known for a massively blown out but melodic sound, helped the band to be named a highlight of SXSW 2011 by CNN, Brooklyn Vegan, NPR and Wired. The latter summed up their sound as “the band sounds like it leaped screaming out of My Bloody Valentine's blown amps.”

Rather than trying to raise the dizzying wall of guitar sound on its predecessor, Mauve raises the melodies and dials back the sonic assault while retaining the band’s signature decibel power. Frazier says of this approach “Colour Trip was a great studio album but on Mauve we just wanted to write songs that we would have a blast playing live and could recreate easily on stage.”

The band will be embarking on a five week North American tour this September and October. (Confirmed tour dates below). Pre-order the album HERE on LP, CD and digital editions via Sonic Unyon for North America and Rip 7” on Electric Blue Vinyl via UK label AC30.

Steven Wilson to Premiere "Get All You Deserve" in London

[press release] The world premiere of Get All You Deserve, a new concert film from Steven Wilson will take place at the Prince Charles cinema at London’s Leicester Square on September 6th at 7.30pm.

Directed by long-time visual collaborator Lasse Hoile, Get All You Deserve was filmed in Mexico City during the recent Grace For Drowning Tour. The film is part of a new high definition audio-visual set which captures the spectacular live experience that Wilson and Hoile created for the tour on Blu-ray, DVD and 2CD.

Following the screening there will be a Q&A session where Steven will be available to answer questions from the audience about the film. Tickets for the screening are available from the cinema website for £12 (plus 75p booking fee).

Grace For Drowning was the second album released under Wilson’s own name, following 2009’s exceptionally well-received Insurgentes. The album, released in September 2011, entered the UK top 40 album chart at #34, both the Dutch and German national charts at #22, the US Billboard Rock album chart at #19 (#13 in independent chart) and debuted at #7 in the Polish national charts.

Following the release of Grace For Drowning, Steven embarked on his first ever solo tour, assembling a virtuoso band, featuring Marco Minnemann (drums), Nick Beggs (bass), Theo Travis (flute and sax), Adam Holzman (keys) and Niko Tsonev (guitars), to accompany him. For the shows he worked extensively with Lasse to create a show unlike nothing else that he had ever done with his other bands, Porcupine Tree, Blackfield, No-Man or Bass Communion.

The shows submerged fans in a rich sensory experience: rear speakers provide surround-sound effects, giant screens show off Lasse’s films made specifically to accompany these songs, and cutting-edge lighting designs giving texture to each song.

Get All You Deserve captures one of the highlight shows from the tour. Recorded at a sold-out Teatro Metrop√≥litan in Mexico City, the gig features tracks from both Wilson’s solo albums along with the new, as yet unreleased, track Luminol.

The limited deluxe edition of the 4 disc set (Blu-ray, DVD & 2CD) is packaged in a DVD sized hard-back 40 page book. It is now available to pre-order from the Kscope store for the early-bird price of £24.99 (+ P&P).

Standard retail editions (stand alone DVD and Blu-ray plus 4disc set) will also be in stores from September 24th.

Watch ‘Harmony Korine’, taken from the concert below. Check out Steven’s Soundcloud channel for more live tracks from the Grace for Drowning tour 2011/12.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club Liscence Music for Charity

A message from Black Rebel Motorcycle Club...

"As you may already know, we as BRMC feel very strongly about trying to reflect the values we hold as individuals and as a group in our work. One of our priorities has always been balancing any commercial success we achieve with a commitment to contributing to the well-being of not just ourselves.

We’re excited to tell you about a major step we accomplished toward that goal.

Earlier this year we were approached by Miller/Coors about the use of the song "Conscience Killer" in a TV commercial for Miller Lite. We initially said no to this, but then looked back at it as an opportunity to raise money for a cause we believe in. For example, The Not for Sale Campaign is an organization that we have supported for many years, as it aids in the fight against human trafficking.

In an unprecedented move, Miller/Coors has agreed to make a large financial contribution to The Not For Sale campaign for the use of the song. Along with them, our label partner Vagrant Records will be making a contribution, and we will also be donating the money we make from the ad to this organization we so strongly believe in. The commercial just started running and we have already received confirmation that the donation has been sent to The Not For Sale Campaign.

We wanted to share this with you because our involvement in commercials has always been a conflicting issue for us. Now we feel we’ve figured out a way to turn them into opportunities we can be proud of, and hope you feel the same.

While we will not be able to do this every time something like this presents itself in the future, just know that if there is a next time, we would love to do this with you as a community.

During the next few weeks, we’d like to hear from you about your favorite charities or community organizations, local or otherwise. Please send us any information you think would be helpful in allowing us to check them out and learn about what they do, but we cannot consider individual or personal causes unless they are part of a community issue. Our goal is to set up an online vote to where the commercial money would go next.

The Sword Announce Release Date + Anthony Bourdain Appearance

[press release] The Sword will appear Monday, September 3rd at 9 PM ET/PT on Travel Channel's highly rated show Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations-The Final Tour. The show was shot in March in Austin, Texas at the SXSW music festival. Check out a clip from the show below.

In the episode, the band takes the opportunity to introduce Bourdain to their branded hot sauce "Tears of Fire." As of Tuesday September 4th, the sauce will be available for purchase HERE.

Creator of the sauce, Brian Rush, says the following, "They wanted something hot, but with a good flavor. I already make a really hot red habanero sauce (August in Austin), so it was just a matter of taking that over the top. I added the infamous Ghost Chile, the hottest pepper in the world along with some extra spice to give it another dimension of zing. This is an other-worldly sauce with both flavor and heat, named after a killer song for one of the best bands Austin has to offer."

Apocryphon, the band's fourth album and first for new label Razor & Tie will be released October 23rd and followed by a U.S tour. Apocryphon was produced and engineered by J. Robbins (Clutch, Jawbox) and recorded at Magpie Cage Studios in Baltimore, MD. The album will feature cover art by famed comic book artist J.H. Williams III (Batwoman, Promethea). Tour details will be announced soon.

Quick Notes: Foo Fighters, White Laces, La Dispute + Chris Cornell

*[] On September 5th, Foo Fighters will perform at a Rock the Vote event at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, NC, as Billboard reports. The concert will also feature performances from Jack Johnson and Asher Roth.

Foo Fighters stayed away from the political fray during the early years of their existence; however, in 2004, the band performed at several rallies for Presidential candidate John Kerry. And earlier this year, they headlined a concert fundraiser for President Obama.

Below, you can watch the band’s video for “White Limo”. Wouldn’t it be great if this is how Barack traveled to the convention?

*[] The Richmond, Virginia band White Laces plays a sort of romantically swoony indie-pop, layering up intimate and pillowy sounds so instinctively and assuredly that you can’t always tell what’s a synth and what’s a guitar. Moves, their new debut album, fits in nicely during a summer when the new Wild Nothing and DIIV albums are getting heavy burn, and it hits a lot of those same pleasure centers. Hear it HERE.

*[] La Dispute will tour briefly with Sainthood Reps this fall. Dates include:

10/28 Gainsville, FL @ The Fest 11
10/29 Savannah, GA @ After Dark at FBC
10/30 Birmingham, AL @ Zydaco
10/31 TBA
11/1 Hattiesburg, MS @ Bernie's Boom Boom Room
11/2 Baton Rouge, LA @ HTGT Thrift
11/3 Austin, TX @ Fun Fun Fun Fest (night show)
11/4 Austin, TX @ Fun Fun Fun Fest

*[] Chris Cornell has dropped off the bill of this weekend's Made In America festival in Philadelphia. An announcement on Cornell's website says he will be unable to perform due to "scheduling conflicts." reports Cornell is slated to be in Des Moines, IA on Saturday as part of a rally for President Barack Obama. He had been slated to play Made In America on Sunday, and was expected to perform alongside Pearl Jam later in the night, reuniting Temple Of The Dog. Cornell wrote on Facebook today that he actually pulled out of the Made In America lineup two weeks ago but it was apparently not announced until last night.

Deftones in Studio Working on Covers + More

[] According to the interview below, the Deftones will spend the tail end of this month tracking new covers in the desert. If the bands recent pictures on their Instagram are any indication, these sessions are now underway.

As previously reported, the covers are expected to serve as b-sides for their upcoming seventh studio album. Band frontman Chino Moreno had previously stated that they were aiming to put their stamp on songs by Elvis Presley and Earth, Wind & Fire during the sessions.

Meanwhile, though a tentative October 9th release date was originally announced for the bands as-yet untitled new album they themselves have mentioned it might not make that street date. For now, a new show has popped up online. It will take place at The Warfield in San Francisco, CA on October 10th and feature Scars On Broadway as support. No word yet if more shows with the same bill are being planned or not.

The Foreign Resort Ready "Scattered and Buried" For September

[press release] Danish rockers, The Foreign Resort are back with a follow-up to their highly successful 2011 EP that media heavyweights, such as a Soundvenue, declared “a cold-blooded, solid and brutal crowbar of an EP that really should open doors for The Foreign Resort.” “Take a Walk” was their breakthrough hit that garnered numerous spins on Denmark’s P3 and P6 BEAT, as well as stations in the US. The accompanying video was referred to as a virtual tour of Copenhagen.

Releasing on September 25, 2012 in the US (Monolathe Records) and Europe through Phonofile Distribution, Scattered & Buried is a collection of new material, remakes, and remixes, that continues the bands guitar-laden sonic assault by mashing 80′s new wave and today’s post-rock sound. “Delayed”, an epic journey with crushing guitars is set to be the first release. “Lost my Way (2012)” evolves from their 2009 Offshore release by adding a new level of aggression. No TFR release would be complete without a haunting piece to lose yourself in. “We’re gonna drown before we give in” is the defining theme behind “Tide”. In addition, you will find remixes by Novachild, Sway, and Evol that take fan favorites and re-work them into completely new atmospheres that express The Foreign Resort’s music in an new light.

In September, the guys will be heading on an Event Tour of Denmark, Germany, and Luxembourg with the American band, Nightmare Air, then jetting off to the US for three weeks in October. This time around, Patrick Ryming has taken over bass duties and adds a fresh new element to their sound and live performances that fans new and old will truly appreciate.

Previously, The Foreign Resort was hand-picked by The Raveonettes to support them on their tour of Denmark and have supported A Place to Bury Strangers and Swervedriver, and performed an impressive 80+ shows in the US.

Formed in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2006, The Foreign Resort is Denmark’s next breakout band. They have found the perfect marriage of New Wave, Shoegaze, and Post Rock with a live show that was described by Gaffa Magazine (Denmark), as “The Cure embedded in noise with Tears For Fears-ish melodies and the energy burst of Joy Division.”

The Foreign Resort is: Mikkel B. Jakobsen – Vocals, Guitar, Henrik Fischlein – Guitar, Patrick Ryming – Bass, and Morten Hansen – Drums, Vocals

Gaytheist Announce Northwest Shows + More

[press release] Portland trio Gaytheist has just unleashed Stealth Beats via Seattle's Good To Die Records. The album is 12 tracks and 23 minutes of pummeling yet melodic punk-metal that has hailed as "combining the howl of the Jesus Lizard with the pop-leaning mania of Torche to thrilling effect". Willamette Weekly has also jumped on the high-praise bandwagon saying "Gaytheist is a trio that rips rock music apart like a paper shredder, and does so with infectious and gleeful abandon. Fans of Black Elk, Scratch Acid, and all manner of hard-edged metal deconstruction will find plenty of bile to swish between their teeth.”

It's safe to say people are excited about Gaytheist, and for excellent reason. The bands third (first on Good to Die) and most crushing album to-date, Stealth Beats, is now available on vinyl and digital formats, and you can find it streaming in its entirety on the band's official Bandcamp page [link above].

Meanwhile Gaytheist has added a few additional dates to a string of Northwest shows in September and October, with more touring in the works.

9/08 – Portland, OR @ Rontoms (Burnside Distro MFNW Party) – 2pm
9/08 – Portland, OR @ People's Sandwich w/ Rabbits, Fist Fite - 4pm
9/14 – Portland, OR @ Kenton Club (Portland Record Release Show)

10/13 - Portland, OR @ Berbati's (DBmonkey 10th anniversary)
10/18 – Seattle, WA @ Chop Suey w/ Absolute Monarchs + guests, DJ Hannah Levin

2012 Press:

“There are rumbling bass lines that would not sound out of place on a Jesus Lizard record, adding depth to the abrasive guitar riffs that put the rock into this heavy punk sound. Tuneful but aggressive at the same time, the songs are short sharp shocks that leave you wanting to play them again.”
-Black Insect Laughter (UK)

"...eccentric post-hardcore (in the early ’90s, old-fashioned sense) with some quirky vocal theatrics and odd-ball lyrics (see “Post-Apocalyptic Lawsuit”) that together sound like a heck of a lot of fun. Catch these dudes at a Romney/Ryan rally near you!"

"STEALTH BEATS, has the air of the 80’s hardcore explosion, fused with chunky riffs adopted from modern hardcore, accompanied by singing styles that range from beautifully clean blasts to trashy, throat-tearing screams."
- Seattle Music Insider

Kylesa to Release "From the Vaults, Vol. 1" in November

[press release] Kylesa is set to release From The Vaults, Vol. 1, a twelve-song collection featuring unreleased, new and alternate versions of songs spanning their catalogue including one entirely new song ("End Truth") as well as the band's legendary cover of Pink Floyd's "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" on Nov. 20 (Nov. 16 in Europe).

"This project has been a labor of love," explained guitarist/singer/producer Phillip Cope. "We have spent over a year going through old songs, covers, etc. and collected those we felt went well together; remixing and finishing them up. We didn't want to release something just thrown together so we put a lot of thought and time into it. I am really happy about how this came together. I think it is a good representation of Kylesa's different styles from early on to present day."

The Savannah-based band recently wrapped up a European tour, which included stops at the Wacken Open Air and Area 4 Festivals, and will enter the studio to begin work on a new album for 2013. Kylesa's most recent release, 2010's Spiral Shadow, was revered by fans and critics alike as a "record that trashes everything you might expect from the genre" (Pitchfork) and is "as sweaty as a south Georgia summer" (Spin). Singer/guitarist Laura Pleasants was recently featured on the cover of Decibel Magazine's inaugural Women in Metal issue.

Summer People Offer Update on Recording, Shows + More

A message from Summer People...

"We’ve been shacked up writing songs for an upcoming full length thus our lack of activity lately. We played a show in Westchester a week or so ago but otherwise blah. I’m sure every band in the world says that they are “really excited about the new songs” and “they are the best thing we’ve ever written” so add us to the status quo because we are solipsismal in that way. You have to be after all. Why make music if you don’t think it’s worth listening to? One criticism that we’ve heard via some reviews, and via that random dude who thinks we are interested in his opinion, is that we are musical hoarders not willing to leave behind a single influence. Guilty as charged. At the same time we understand the value in disciplining ourselves and so I think most will find this thing refreshingly cohesive. To be frank, we’ve stripped Summer People of some of the bells and whistles and opted for something raw. ANYWAY………..

The drought will soon be over ladies and gents. We have a nice busy fall in store so let’s take a look at what lies ahead:

SHOWS= November 1st thru 3rd with Goldmines in Fredonia (BJs), Buffalo (TBA), and Rochester (The Bug Jar duh!). NOveMbeR 16th in Ithaca hopefully with 100% Black (some rad Film Festival). November 17th in Binghamton with Cattle Drums, Underground River, and 100% Black. That show will be at Atomic Toms. December 5-8th will be a mini tour with Porches ending at Bubba’s mighty BIG DAY IN with some pretty spectacular bands TBA.

On the December tour we will be selling/giving away our latest split album with Porches. Two songs each for real cheap. Consider it an incentive to be stoked for our full length.

We will be filming a music video (that’s what the kids call em these days) at the end of September. The concept is hilarious therefore the video should make us look like complete Neanderthals. The amazing Heather Craig will be shooting it.

That should suffice for now right?

Great Talk."

Quick Notes: At The Drive-In, Mastodon, Radiohead, Baroness, Hopewell, Markov, Passenger Peru, Unnatural Helpers + More

*[] The BBC have uploaded a series of professionally-filmed videos capturing performances from the annual “Reading Festival” in the UK this past weekend. You can find songs by At The Drive-In and Mastodon below:

*[] The 38th season of Austin City Limits will begin with a bang as Radiohead and Bon Iver will appear in back to back episodes. Pitchfork reports that Radiohead’s episode will air on October 6th, and Bon Iver’s episode will air on October 13th. Below, you can preview the Radiohead episode with a performance of “Morning Mr. Magpie”.

*[] The remaining members of Baroness have all been released from the hospital following their bus crash while on tour in the UK. In addition to putting the bus driver in critical condition, the crash left the bands John Baizley with a broken left arm and left leg; while Allen Blickle and Matt Maggioni each suffered fractured vertebrae.

Various other members of their road crew were treated and released for injuries suffered in the accident. A new statement was just issued by the band and reads as follows:

“John Baizley has been released from hospital. Allen and Matt have arrived back in the United States. All remaining 2012 tour dates are canceled. Thank you for all of the continued support.”

*[press release] Celebrated New York rock band HOPEWELL will release an EP of new material titled Another Music on September 11 via Tee Pee Records. The first single from the new effort is a cover of Brian Eno's "Needle In The Camel's Eye" featuring Mark Gardener of eternally cool, seminal shoegaze band RIDE on lead vocals. A deluxe 7" single of the track will come bundled with an EP of five new tracks that "explore HOPEWELL's noisy '90's roots as well as its more recent penchant for cinematic kraut rock sculptures." Today, self-titled premieres "Needle in the Camel's Eye", calling the track "a faithful, frenetic cover." Check out HOPEWELL featuring RIDE's Mark Gardener and the artists' take on the Brian Eno classic now HERE!

*Austin, TX post-punk quartet Markov will release The Flatlands EP this Friday, August 31st. The band will celebrate the albums release at Red 7 with The Bronx, American Sharks, and Wet Lung. Until then, you can stream and download the digital copy via the band's official Bandcamp page.

*A message from Passenger Peru... "just letting all of our peeps know that we recently had a wonderful opportunity with an awesome NY radio station WHFR. this wed 8/29 at 8pm (eastern time) we will be playing the new album in its entirety! also we will be interviewed in between, so you will get a behind the scenes look at how we made the album. This will be the last time that the album will be able to be heard until our record release date (sept 25th), be the first to hear it!"

*[] Caustic Seattle rockers Unnatural Helpers' new album, Land Grab, is out September 25 via Hardly Art. You've heard one song from the LP already, "Hate Your Teachers"; "Toil" is the song that appears right before it on the album.

DOWNLOAD: Unnatural Helpers: "Toil"

*[] As previously reported, Crypts is the new project of These Arms Are Snakes vocalist Steve Snere, programmer Bryce Brown, and visual artist Nick Bartoletti. In July, the trio premiered the eerie “Territories”, a single from their debut self-titled album. And today, with a little over a week before the album hits shelves, the entire eight-track effort is streaming below. As evidenced by the lead-off track, the LP is a synth-heavy blend of glitchy gloom-pop, heavy on the bass and the post-hardcore sensibilities, with stand-out tracks including “Daft” and “Smut”.

Crypts lands in stores on September 4th via Sargent House.

UME to Appear on Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations

[press release] Ume today announced that they will appear on the season premiere of the Emmy award-winning series "Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations - The Final Tour." The episode will debut on Travel Channel on Monday, September 3rd at 9:00 PM ET / PT to launch the ninth and final season of the acclaimed series.

The one-hour season opener starts in Austin, TX where Bourdain soaks in all that is good in the hipster hotspot during the 2012 SXSW Interactive, Film, and Music Festival. With a variety of musical artists as his guides, Tony enjoys a great week of music, fantastic food and partying with a bunch of cool new rock star friends.

While in Austin, Bourdain attended Ume's packed performance at Hotel Vegas for the Brooklyn Vegan SXSW party. To quote Bourdain, it was "... a shitload of rawk in a tiny little room." Bourdain also enjoyed some hardcore eats with the local trio, over dinner at the Barley Swine restaurant. Check out the teaser below for a preview of the band's time with Bourdain.

"We're big fans of Anthony Bourdain," said Ume's Lauren Larson. "We're thrilled to have had the opportunity to help show him what makes Austin such a unique place and honored he came out to see us play live in our hometown!"

Before Ume heads back out in the road in the fall, they will head back into the studio to work on the follow-up to their debut full-length album Phantoms. Ume will be recording their new album with Grammy Award winning producer Adam Kasper (Foo Fighters, Cat Power, Queens of the Stone Age).

Hailing from Austin, Texas, Ume is Lauren Larson (Vocals, Guitar), Eric Larson (Bass), and Rachel Fuhrer (Drums). The trio's music is one of beautiful juxtapositions: the loud and soft, the aggressive and eerie, buoyant melodies bursting through wall-of-noise dissonance. Ume explores the artier, heavier side of indie rock, post-punk, and alternative rock. Like a bridge between Black Sabbath and Bat For Lashes, the LP is heavy, anthemic, beautiful and mesmerizing.

Quick Notes: Quicksand, Gifts From Enola, Flaming Lips, Refused, Neil Young + Rage Against The Machine

*[] Quicksand hit the Bowery Ballroom in New York, NY last night (August 24th) for the first in their string of East Coast reunion shows. Both the bands set list and fan-filmed footage from the performance can be found HERE.

*[] Gifts From Enola are streaming a new song titled “Cherry” from their upcoming album “A Healthy Fear“. The track is now available over at “A Healthy Fear” will land in stores on November 13th through The Mylene Sheath.

*[] As you may recall, the Flaming Lips had a huge falling out with Erykah Badu after posting an unapproved NSFW video for their Heady Fwends collaboration "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face". The song now has a new singer, Dresden Dolls vocalist Amanda Palmer, who appears nude in a bathtub for the new NSFW video (via the Future Heart).

Coyne hinted at the replacement in an interview with MTV back in June. You can read Badu's lengthy note to Coyne here.

Wayne Coyne also directed the upcoming video for Palmer's "Do It With a Rock Star", which, as the Future Heart notes, both Palmer and Coyne tweeted about extensively. It looks like it'll be similarly NSFW.

*[] Refused will head down to Australia in November to play the following series of shows. Tickets will go on sale August 31st.

11/09 Perth, AUS – Metro Fremantle
11/11 Brisbane, AUS – Eatons Hill
11/13 Sydney, AUS – Enmore Theatre
11/15 Melbourne, AUS – The Palace
11/17 Adelaide, AUS – Thebarton Theatre

*[] Neil Young & Crazy Horse have revealed more details about Psychedelic Pill, their second album of the year following June’s Americana. According to the band’s website, the album was recorded immediately following Americana at Audio Casa Blanca, and will be released as a double-CD and triple-vinyl due to the lengths of the songs.

Like they did with Americana, the band will accompany Psychedelic Pill’s release with full-length videos for each of the songs. A Blu-ray containing high resolution versions of the videos will be packaged with the album, and low resolution iTunes downloads will also be available.

Below, you can watch the band perform their new 20-minute jammer “Walk Like A Giant” during a concert earlier this month.

*[] Rage Against The Machine have begun celebrating the coming 20th anniversary of their self-titled debut album which was released back on November 10th in 1992. To that end the band recently launched a Tumblr full of stories from fans and more documenting their early days.

The aforementioned blog has already become a treasure trove for stories and memorabilia for the record; including a photo of the gold plaque for it (complete with gold cassette tape.)

Quick Notes: Quicksand, Minus The Bear, Elliott Smith + Perhaps

*[] Quicksand returned to the airwaves last night, August 22nd. The group were the musical guests on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” and performed their tracks “Fazer” and “Omission” on the show. Footage of both songs taken from the broadcast has landed online below. (*note that the song names were mixed up on the Jimmy Fallon website at the time of this posting.)

The bands 1993 album Slip will receive a new limited edition vinyl pressing on September 11th. It will be made available on a variety of colors with more details available at HERE.

*[] Minus The Bear are streaming their new album “Infinity Overhead” in full via their official website. The outing will land on store shelves this coming Tuesday, August 28th, via Dangerbird Records.

*[] Throughout August, the Kill Rock Stars label has been sharing alternate takes of Elliott Smith cuts to celebrate his birthday. Following rare versions of "Alameda", "Punch and Judy", and "Angeles", the label today shares an outtake of Either/Or's "Ballad of Big Nothing", streaming above via Bandcamp. Kill Rock Stars is also selling Smith's entire KRS discography, bundled digitally as "The Indie Years", at a discounted rate throughout the month.

*Perhaps (featuring former members of Red Bellows) is the latest band making it's way into the incredible Boston music scene, and their debut Volume One should having them standing out. The power trio's single track, 38 minute record is a demonstration in the possibilities of prog rock, with far our guitars and rhythms that maintain a solid sense of structure throughout. The record was produced by Michael Thomas (Grass Is Green/SuperVolcano) and should be available digitally and on cassette soon. The band are hitting the road for a tour in support of the record, and all dates can be found at the link above. Check out Volume One (stoned and with headphones was how it was recommended to me)...

JEFF The Brotherhood Discuss New Record, Touring + More with Stereogum

[] JEFF The Brotherhood — AKA the two-man party machine consisting of brothers Jake and Jamin Orrall — just released their seventh album (Hypnotic Nights) and embarked on what will basically be an endless tour of the world. Though the endless touring is nothing new for the Orrall brothers, who have basically built a career out of playing nonstop shows for the past decade, things have definitely changed. For their new album, the duo enlisted the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach as a producer and will release the album in partnership with Warner Bros, two moves that should help them expand their fanbase dramatically. Longtime fans of the bands of the Brotherhood needn’t worry too much about the band getting too fancy though. According to Jamin Orrall, the business of making records and playing shows is still mostly just an excuse to hang out and drink beer. When it stops being fun, they’ll quit.

STEREOGUM: Hypnotic Nights is the first record you guys worked on with an outside producer. Why now? And how was the experience of working with Dan?

ORRALL: I don’t think we were waiting for a right time to work with a producer. It’s the first time someone has come to us and offered, as a producer, so I think that was a big part of it. We’ve never been like “Let’s get a producer” and gone after and found someone. But Dan came to us and said he’d be into working with us, and wanted us to come to a studio and record. So we were like “Well, if he’s excited about it, might as well try it out, cause it could be fun.” And it was really fun. I thought it was going to be a lot different but it wasn’t really.

STEREOGUM: The actual role that a producer plays with a band can be very ambiguous, depending on the producer and what the band wants/needs.

ORRALL: I was kind of anxious up until the recording sessions because when he told us he wanted to work with us we went by his studio to check it out … and half the reason we did it was because we liked his studio so much. We didn’t really know him when we went in — we’d just met him a couple of times. I was just worried, “Oh it’s going to be awful” cause I’d heard so many horror stories about producers. But it was totally enjoyable and productive and fun. It didn’t really feel that different than when Jake and I just go in. It was just one more head there. Just someone there that would give us ideas and help us if we wanted it.

STEREOGUM: Production-wise, does he have a fancy studio?

ORRALL: Define fancy.

STEREOGUM: I just assume from what I know about him that he would have a bunch of amazing old gear.

ORRALL: Yes, if you mean old and amazing, then yes. He has a lot of old and amazing gear and it’s just a really great room. We got really cool sounds out of there.

STEREOGUM: How long did it take?

ORRALL: I think it took seven or eight days. Which was really cool because we’ve never been in a studio for more than three or four days.

STEREOGUM: Really? For a lot of bands, seven or eight days is nothing.

ORRALL: I think bands going into the studio for a month at a time is too long. Unless they’re writing in the studio but I think that’s a waste of money.

STEREOGUM: Yeah, that is a waste of time, I think. If you have your own studio it’s one thing.

ORRALL: Just have your shit ready to go before you get there, you know?

STEREOGUM: Well how did you guys work in the past? You would just have the songs and go in and bang em out as fast as possible?

ORRALL: Pretty much. We would just have the songs and then be like “Alright, this person said we could come in the studio really cheap for like two days or three days.” This was a lot more comfortable than that. I mean it’s exciting too to go in just for three days but it creates some limitations. It’s really nice to be able to hang out for a week and have time to just try things.

STEREOGUM: You are on the road now. I get the impression that you guys tour constantly.

ORRALL: Yeah, we tour constantly. Lately we’ve been having like one or two weeks off at a time between tours. Obviously we haven’t been going into the studio since we just made a record. With this record, we kind of realized that we’d been touring too much on our last one. We didn’t have any new songs because we’d been touring constantly. We just started going over to Jake’s house two or three times a week until we had a bunch of songs. When we went in I think we were doing the same thing we normally do –the first two days we were just like banging through it. I think we had all of the guitar and drum instrumental tracks — all the tracks without vocals — in the first two days, because that was the way we were used to working. I think we asked him, like, “Should we maybe work on some of these before we finish recording all the tracks?” He was just like “if you’re comfortable with it, keep banging it out and we’ll work on them later.”

Les Claypool's Bass Sells for $50,000+ in Charity Auction

[] Primus frontman Les Claypool‘s recent auction of a prototype of one of his personal basses wound up selling for $50,599.99 USD. Proceeds from the auction went to Claypool‘s ailing two year old nephew, who suffers from a rare form of infant leukemia.

Claypool thanked fans for their support in the auction while also sharing a letter from the tot’s mother, Aimee. You can read all that below. Meanwhile, donations can be made over at

“Those of you who followed the progress of the auction of one of my main Pachyderm basses on eBay last week for my little nephew who is fighting infant leukemia will, I assume, be equally as surprised as myself to see that the auction ended with a whopping $50,599.00. The amount of interest and support received on this instrument has been incredibly heartwarming, humbling and eye opening. I cannot begin to thank enough everyone who stepped up to bid or to raise the profile of this online event.

Many revelations were had during the progress of this auction. One was that, because of the great expense of Matthew’s treatment, no amount was really going to cover the cost nor was it going to solve the problem. But the event itself, the daily watching of the bids pour in had been an incredibly positive experience and joyful distraction for my Bro and his family who ride the emotional roller coaster of watching their child suffer on a daily basis.

Another revelation has been seeing other families who have children in similar situations gain hope that some profile has been raised to an affliction that few really know about or understand. I’ve noticed myself, as has my Bro, the response many people have when they hear of Matthew; “Leukemia? Well, they have come a long way with childhood leukemia”, is a sentence that my Brother and his family hear often, in fact when I first told my doc about Matthew he said the exact same thing.

These encouraging words, which are meant to comfort, are accurate. Childhood leukemia has a high cure rate; around 70% I’m told. But, what few realize is that “Refractory Infants Leukemia”, which is what Matthew has, at this point has a 100% fatality rate. Many times over the years babies die of this disease and it is thought to be SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) because the organs fail before any diagnosis of leukemia can be made.

Matthew was diagnosed at 2 months of age because his blood was tested when he was having trouble fighting a respiratory infection. Babies generally aren’t blood tested at birth, because of the high expense, so often these cases go unnoticed until it is too late and the organs are too severely damaged. (Being that I see folks now a days spending upwards of $1200 on a combo stroller/car seat, it may be a prudent shower gift to have everyone chip in on a “birthday-blood-test” for an impending bundle of joy. If not for anything but giving some peace of mind to those freshly neurotic first parents that many of us will become at some point and time).

Because Refractory Infants Leukemia is so rare and the treatment is cutting edge and very experimental, my brother has likened their situation and the few others they know as being on an island alone dealing with something that nobody really knows too much about and quite frankly, don’t want to know about. I know myself that when the commercials for St. Jude’s Hospital used to come on the TV I had to switch channels. Not because I did not care but because the thought of children suffering, especially when you are a parent trying to dodge the various dangers of life for your own little shavers, is too overwhelming to even think about.

Unfortunately, this affliction is on the rise and something in our environment is triggering it. Back when I was busting tires for a living, we were breathing large amounts of brake dust long after science had come to the conclusion that, “hey, this asbestos stuff isn’t good for folks”. For decades my father and uncles practically bathed in chemicals while working as mechanics that now, by law, are outlawed or need to be handled with protective gloves and garments.

Twerps Debut New Single "He's In Stock" Via Stereogum

[press release] Cheeky, charming and touchingly direct, Melbourne foursome Twerps are rising from humble beginnings to become international lo-fi pop champions. Formed in late 2008, Twerps were already supporting the likes of Deerhunter, the Bats (NZ), the Black Lips, Yo La Tengo and Thee Oh Sees within a few months of their first gig.

Their debut EP, released on Chapter Music in late 2009, featured nine short, simple but incredibly infectious tracks, recorded by Eddy Current Suppression Ring/Total Control guitarist Mikey Young. These tracks were also released on cassette by US label Night People (Wet Hair, Peaking Lights).

On the basis of this EP, Twerps began to filter out into the world, and were called "the best new band in Australia" by iconic UK magazine Uncut. More US labels came calling, and Twerps eventually released singles in early 2011 on Underwater Peoples (Mountain Man, Real Estate) and Group Tightener (Best Coast, Cloud Nothings). They also took off on their first US tour that March, a six week cross-country odyssey that saw them shine at SXSW, head through the midwest with Wet Hair, and pack out a New York show with Big Troubles.

Their self-titled debut album followed in late 2011, a co-release by Chapter Music and Underwater Peoples. Lead tracks "Dreamin" and "This Guy" were premiered on Pitchfork and The Fader, respectively, the former of whom gave the album a glowing 7.9 review, then awarded album closer "Coast To Coast" a Best New Track (only the third Aussie band ever to score a BNT, after Cut Copy and Tame Impala). The album was also streamed in full by Gorilla Vs Bear and Stereogum and picked up by hundreds of blogs around the world.

The band returned to SXSW this year, getting written up in the NME, Blllboard and elsewhere, and then toured the US with Real Estate in April. Now, Twerps are ready to announce their first ever headlining US tour and a brand new 7" to along with it. Hear the first taste of the new 7", the punchy "He's In Stock", along with their upcoming US tour dates below.

Twerps will release "Work It Out" 7" (Chapter Music // Underwater Peoples) on Sept 17, 2012.

The Joy Formidable Debut "Wolf's Law" Video

[press release] The Joy Formidable have spent the first half of 2012 gearing up for the release of their second album, 'Wolf's Law', due out in early 2013. As a taster for fans of the new material, today the band have uploaded a video for a track inspired by the album title. 'Wolf's Law' (the track) will not be featured on the album but is a perfect pointer for the band's second album, both musically and thematically. Check it out below.

The Joy Formidable have always been intimately involved in all areas of their music, with Rhydian Daffyd designing the covers for their singles and their debut album, 'The Big Roar'. With the film for 'Wolf's Law' the band worked with director Cat Botibol to create a film that, in the words of Ritzy and Rhydian:

'captures the unforgiving momentum of life, the restlessness of nature's cycles and the parallels as well as the uniqueness of each creature's journey. Contrasting images of the forces of nature at its most violent and destructive with nature as creator, the film poses essential questions which have been at the forefront of our minds throughout the recording process of 'Wolf's Law'. Recording in Wales, London, upstate New York and downtown Manhattan presented us with the extremes of existence from rural solitude to some of the busiest and most developed urban environments on our planet and those contrasts and the thoughts they provoked very much filtered into the choice of images that comprise the film'.

Botibol was also thrilled with the final film, saying that:

"The band really wanted the film to translate the idea of a re-awakening and rebirth. We worked together to select a series of stills and moving imagery that showed the Real and the truth of nature. Through rhythmical editing we created a real symbiosis of imagery and music to evoke the powerful kinetic energy of life in all forms."

Full details on 'Wolf's Law' will follow soon.

...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead Ready "Lost Songs" For October + Debut "Up To Infinity"

[] Austin punks ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead have announced the follow-up to last year's Tao of the Dead. Titled Lost Songs, the band's eighth full-length is out October 23 via Richter Scale/Superball Music. Check out a cut, "Up to Infinity" HERE, which the band has dedicated to Pussy Riot. Frontman Conrad Keely said:

"The music was inspired by the apathy to real world events that has plagued the independent music scene now for over a decade. "Up to Infinity" is about the Syrian civil war. We believe that tyranny and despotism suffered by any people, anywhere, is intolerable and should not be treated as an internal matter, but completely justifies intervention by the international community."
