Geronimo! Return with "The Burden of Genius"

As you may or may not already be aware, Chicago's Geronimo! are one of Exploding In Sound's favorite DIY bands around. Their mix of post-punk, pop, and noisy progressive indie rock is infectious and generally creates a great bong ripping musical atmosphere. After releasing their stellar debut record Fuzzy Dreams in 2010, last year found the band self releasing it's follow up, the fantastically titled Buzz Yr Girlfriend: Vol I [you always get bonus points from us for Home Alone references]. Recorded live onto 4-track, the effort was rough on the production end to say the least, but Geronimo! swooped back in with their new album teaser just a few months after and all hope was restored. The band are now ready to release their next brilliant cassette, Buzz Your Girlfriend Vol 2: The Burden of Genius, due out June 23rd via Don't Give Up The Ship Records.

Opening the record with a cover of Beat Happening's "Indian Summer" and closing with "Battery Acid Soul Patch," a re-imagining of 2010's "Battery Acid Moustache," the inner workings of the cassette EP is filled with brand new Geronimo! goodness. Angular, bubbling, and catchy as flypaper, Geronimo! take the quirky intelligence of Harvey Danger and mix it with sharp bursts of Polvo inspired madness and swirling 90s indie rock charm.

Upcoming Shows:
6/9/2Ol2 - Mickey's Tavern - Madison, WI - Dharmonic Deluxe
6/23/2Ol2 - Township - Chicago, IL - Bird Sounds, JC Autobody, Meat Wave

Quick Notes: Ty Segall Band, Mondo Generator/Josh Homme/John Garcia, Melvins + More

*[] Ty Segall Band — Ty Segall, Mikal Cronin, Charlie Moothart, and Emily Rose Epstein — will release their LP Slaughterhouse on June 26th via In the Red. You’ve already heard the lead single, “Wave Goodbye”. Now, reveals the album track “I Bought My Eyes”, which you can download below.

DOWNLOAD: Ty Segall Band – “I Bought My Eyes”

Slaughterhouse marks the second album from Segall this year. He released a joint LP with White Fence earlier this spring, and a third, solo LP is planned for later this fall.

*[] California bad-ass Nick Oliveri recently returned to his other stoner metal project, Mondo Generator, which just issued its fourth full-length, Hell Comes to Your Heart. Amidst a bevy of guests that include CJ Ramone and Blag Dahlia, Oliveri managed to nab his former Kyuss bandmates Josh Homme and John Garcia, despite their arsenal of differences, for a special one-off on the album’s closing track, “The Last Train”. Equal parts AC/DC, Motörhead, and Black Sabbath, Garcia’s vocals ricochet against Homme’s harmonies, and it’s more or less a clusterfuck. Still, it could soundtrack any Jason Statham-featuring bank robbery, or, shall we say, a two-hour SWAT team stand-off. Check it out below (via Antiquiet).

*[] More newly-aired live footage of the Melvins on “Last Call With Carson Daly” has hit the net. Songs available include “We Are Doomed” and “Friends Before Larry“. The footage was captured at an April 13th, 2012 Los Angeles, CA performance by the band.

They will release their new album “Freak Puke“ as their Melvins Lite incarnation through Ipecac on June 05th.

*[] We’re a week away from the release of Endless Flowers, the newest album from the fuzzed-out San Francisco psych-rock BTW Crocodiles, and we’ve already heard their song “Sunday (Psychic Conversation #9).” And now, all we have to do to hear the album is head on over to Rolling Stone, where it’s streaming in full. Endless Flowers is out 6/5 on Frenchkiss.

*[] Neil Young and Crazy Horse will release their first album in nine years, Americana, on June 5th via Reprise Records. Right now, you can stream the entire thing HERE (via

The 11-track effort features rearrangements of classic, American folk songs. Along with the album stream, the band has revealed music videos for “Oh Susannah”, “Jesus’ Chariot (She’ll Be Comin ’Round The Mountain)”, “Clementine”, and “God Save the Queen”. The band plans to follow up Americana with a second new studio album in September.

*[] Radiohead are planning to host a party to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee during their US tour, according to a tour insider. The Oxford band are currently touring the East Coast of the US in support of their latest album 'The King Of Limbs', but don't plan to let that get in the way of them celebrating the Queen's 60th anniversary of getting her crown.

According to BBC 6Music's Steve Lamacq, the band's head of security Colin has "packed numerous Union Jack and Jubilee tableware" and is "planning a Jubilee party in Washington DC at the weekend".

Radiohead will tour the UK in the autumn, playing their first UK dates in over three years. The band first play a show at Manchester's Evening News Arena on October 6 before playing two shows at London's O2 Arena on October 8 and 9. They will then undertake a full European tour. Caribou will provide support on all dates. They have also booked assorted European shows and festival appearances throughout the summer, including slots at Fuji Rock Festival and Bilbao BBK Live festival.

*[] Refused have added a second Vancouver, BC show at the Vogue Theater in late August. The show will take place on August 26th with ticketing details available on the bands Facebook.

*[] Beck performed with a famous ‘Jack’ at this weekend’s Sasquatch! Music Festival, but it wasn’t the one he just recorded a single with. Rather, Mr. Hansen’s encore featured Jack Black and Kyle Gass, AKA Tenacious D, who aided in performances of “Mutherfuker” and “E-Pro”. Watch fan footage below (via 107.7 The End).

If you haven’t already, pick up a copy of Beck’s new Jack White-produced 7″ through Third Man Record’s website.

RIBS' "Russian Blood" Now Available + More

A message from RIBS...

"There are a lot of things bands say in moments like this: We're 'super excited' for our new record. This really represents a new direction for us. We'd love it if you share it with your friends.

We could say all of those things now – they're all true. But there's a bigger story behind Russian Blood than four guys trying to make a bedroom sound like a stadium. And the truth is, that story hasn't been fully written yet.

For now, just know that this EP was self-produced (as with all of our records), and we have no PR team, no label, no manager. What we do have is you guys. But while the sharing and record sales allow us to continue to make music and tour, right now all we really ask is that you listen to this EP and decide for yourself what you want to do about it.

Listen and get it from RIBS (or iTunes and Amazon):

(And if you're in New England, head to your local Newbury Comics to pick up a copy.)

Praise for Russian Blood:

“Thoroughly DIY … but it carries itself like a really big deal. There are cement-grinding atmospherics out of Trent Reznor’s playbook and canyon banshee wails echoed from long-lost U2 anthems.” – The Boston Globe

“Alarms might be the best song to come out of Boston in 2012.” – Michael Marotta, WFNX

“Primed for explosion … the entire record is a potent post-modern mix of layered riffs, space-shot hooks, and dizzying atmospheric sounds." – The Boston Phoenix

We'll see you on the road soon." - Keith, Chris, Blake, and Justin

John Frusciante Readies Two New Albums for 2012

[] As previously reported, former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante will release a new solo EP, Letur-Lefr, in July. However, as it turns out, that’s just the first of two solo records planned for 2012. According to the musician’s website, the EP, out July 17th, will be followed by a LP entitled PBX Funicular Intaglio Zone on September 24th. He’ll also give away a new song called “Wall of Doors” in between the two releases.

Frusciante said in a statement, “I consider my music to be Progressive Synth Pop, which says nothing about what it sounds like, but does describe my basic approach. I combine aspects of many styles of music and create my own musical forms by way of electronic instruments.”

He explained, “The tracks on Letur-Lefr are from 2010 and PBX was made in 2011. Letur is a compilation, a selected portion of music I made that year while PBX was conceived as an album, the songs having been recorded in succession. The records are very different from each other, so prior to the release of the LP, I will make available a free download of a song called “Walls and Doors”. This song pointed the way towards PBX, but was recorded 7 months earlier. I always took it for granted that “Walls and Doors” would be part of the record, but as it turned out the record was better off without it.”

Frusciante sings, plays the instruments, and served as engineer on both the EP and the LP. In addition, “the EP features a few friends on vocals, mostly MC’ing (presumably The RZA and Truth Hurts’ Shari Watson). The LP has one feature, the rest of the vocals being my own,” he said.

Pre-orders for Letur-Lefr are now ongoing at Frusciante’s website. Both records will be available on vinyl, CD, cassette and in 32 bit, FLAC and MP3 digital.

Torche Announce UK/EU Tour Dates

[press release] Miami, Florida proctors of hard rock, TORCHE, have announced the first European tour dates in support of their recently released third LP, Harmonicraft, today. The band will perform in the UK, Germany, Netherlands, France, Belgium and Switzerland in September.

Led by vocalist/guitarist Steve Brooks (formerly of doom dropouts, Floor), Jonathan Nuñez and Rick Smith (also members of the grindcore outfit, Shitstorm) and new guitarist, Andrew Elstner, (former vocalist/guitarist for St. Louis’ Riddle of Steel), TORCHE have been steamrolling the underground-metal scene since their 2004 inception and made big waves in 2008 with the release of Meanderthal, their second full-length album. Winning accolades from both the underground metal scene as well as a whole new crop of fans who were just taking notice for the first time, the mainstream indie rock community. Now with outlets like Pitchfork, Spin, Stereogum, Decibel, Quietus, Classic Rock and Kerrang! all piling praise upon the band for their newest collection of super heavy, yet totally accessible melodic metal songs, TORCHE are bringing their dense, delicious and peerless live performance to the UK and Europe.

TORCHE Tour Dates:

13 Sep Moho Live Manchester, England
14 Sep Rock City Basement Nottingham, England
15 Sep Captain's Rest Glasgow, Scotland
16 Sep XOYO London, England
17 Sep The Haunt Brighton, England
18 Sep The Cellar Southampton, England

26 Sep 59 to 1 Munich, Germany
27 Sep Abart Zurich, Switzerland
28 Sep Bi Nuu Berlin, Germany
29 Sep Luxor Cologne, Germany
30 Sep FZW Dortmund, Germany

“Currently buying every note of music ever made by the band Torche. Rather excited about this” - Zane Lowe via Twitter

"[Harmonicraft] still brings the heft and thick cut distortion, but never wastes a single moment's breath on anything superfluous. So whether it's head-spinning fretboard wig-outs of Sky Trials or the sleepy sludge of Roaming, everything on here hits the spot...this record is deserving of a mainstream audience." - 4/5 KERRANG!

"The cover art...actually serves as a rather apt visual representation for exactly what it is that makes the group such an enigma: their inane ability to appear fun, whilst actually being quite dark, and to culture hugely melodic, almost pop hooks yet graft them to gigantic thunderous riffs that are amongst the heaviest a different league." - 9/10 METAL HAMMER

Quick Notes: Liars, Tool's Danny Carey, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, + More

*[] As revealed by Angus Andrew in a recent Progress Report, Liars are experimenting with some new textural territory, mining more electronic sounds and beats. We got a sense of that on the first single, “No. 1 Against The Rush,” but it’s even more apparent on the newly surfaced “Octagon,” a track a lot of people are going to compare to Radiohead (just a heads up). Hear it HERE. WIXIW is out 6/5 on Mute.

*[] Tool drummer Danny Carey performed the bands track “Vicarious” with a number of aspiring teenage musicians in conjunction with Los Angeles, CA’s School Of Rock West earlier this month. Footage of that, along with a cover of Led Zeppelin‘s “Whole Lotta Love“, can be seen below. According to Metalinsider, Carey told those in attendance that around five “good songs” are nearly written for Tool‘s new long-awaited album.

*[] Neil Young and Crazy Horse have revealed yet another track and video from their upcoming LP, Americana. This time, it’s the band’s take on the British National Anthem, “God Save The Queen”, which comes accompanied with found footage of — you guessed it — the queen. Check it out below. Americana, the band’s first of two reunion albums planned for 2012, will be released on June 5th via Reprise Records. If you haven’t already, watch the videos for “Oh Susannah”, “Jesus’ Chariot (She’ll Be Comin ’Round The Mountain)”, and “Clementine” HERE.

*[] Beck's live performances have been few and far between the past few years, but this week, he kicked off a summer tour that will take him to various festivals. Last night, he played the Santa Barbara Bowl. Justin Wagner shot video of the performance of "E Pro", from 2005's Guero. Around 50 seconds in, Beck's extremely energetic, eight-year old son Cosimo comes out on stage and breaks into some killer dance moves. Probably the most adorable thing you will see on the internet today.

*[] Retribution Gospel Choir has just released a delightfully lo-fi video for “Maharisha,” off of their recent EP The Revolution. The video features ’80s-esque stylized, colorized noise in strategic spots, adding movement and life to the band members performing the song, standing stoic and unaffected in contrast to the uptempo song.

Retribution Gospel Choir has a residency at the Turf Club in St. Paul, Minn., coming up in June. Check out the tour dates and video below.

6/5 – St. Paul, Minn. @ Turf Club
6/12 – St. Paul, Minn. @ Turf Club
6/19 – St. Paul, Minn. @ Turf Club
6/26 – St. Paul, Minn. @ Turf Club

Benefit Compilation for Jason Noble (Shipping News/Rodan) Available for Pre-Order

"In Pleasant Company: A Mixtape For Jason" is a benefit album for Shipping News' Jason Noble put together by Gordon Withers of Office of Future Plans. The album is now available for pre-order via Bandcamp on limited edition cassette and digitally. Featuring music from BELLS≥, J. Robbins, Black God, Beauty Pill, Ryan Patterson, Gordon Withers and more, this is a great compilation for an even better cause. Here's more info from the site...

"Jason Noble is a pioneering force in the independent music scene. He has been involved in many groundbreaking projects over the years, helping forge not just one, but two genres: post-rock (with Rodan and Shipping News), and avant/indie-classical (with Rachel’s). In 2009, Jason was diagnosed with Synovial Sarcoma, a rare form of cancer, and since then has been through several rounds of treatments. Jason and his wife have health insurance, but as with any major medical expense, they need all the extra help they can get. Since 2009 there have been countless benefit shows in Jason’s honor, and this year should see the release of two benefit compilations - this one, and a separate compilation of all-live recordings from Louisville bands. Both compilations will share this Bandcamp site [link above]. Look for the Louisville compilation to be released sometime this fall.

The concept of a mixtape resonates with many of Jason’s admirers and long-time fans - it is the format by which many of us were introduced to his music, and his songs have occupied special places on countless lovingly-crafted mixtapes over the years. Putting together a new mixtape for Jason seemed like the perfect tribute. The cassette version of this compilation comes in a Stumptown printers chipboard package, hand-stamped with artwork by Zach Barocas, and hand-numbered. It is a limited edition of 200."

Find the benefit compilations on Facebook HERE!

Quick Notes: Mad Season, A Place to Bury Strangers, Marriages + More

*[] A live Mad Season reunion of sorts took place at the Showbox in Seattle, WA last night, May 23rd. The performance was part of Pearl Jam‘s “Flight To Mars” benefit shows.

It saw original Mad Season members Mike McCready (Pearl Jam) and Barrett Martin (Screaming Trees) joined by Loaded‘s Jeff Rouse on vocals (in place of the late Layne Staley); and Rick Friel (The Rockfords) on bass (in place of the late John Baker Saunders.)

You can watch fan-filmed footage of the four performing Mad Season‘s “River Of Deceit” at the show below:

*[] New York noise rockers A Place to Bury Strangers recreate the movie Drive with a bit of a Grindhouse twist in the music video for “You Are The One”. While that film already had plenty of visceral fight scenes and trendy jackets, APTBS’ version feels less romantic and glimmery, doing away with subtlety and making this a sadistic tale where baseball bat beatdowns and lovemaking are the same gory experience. Still, like its predecessor, it’s got the perfect soundtrack for doing terrible things to other people. Watch it below (via APTBS’ third album, Worship, hits stores on June 26th via Dead Oceans.

*[] Russian Circles‘ forthcoming August U.S. tour will now feature both Chelsea Wolfe and Marriages (Red Sparowes). Dates for the trek are due to be revealed soon.

*[] With its signal flare riffs, interlocking rhythms and rumbling, eyes-on-the-stratosphere majesty, "Limbs"-- the lead-off track from D.C. experimental punk trio Imperial China's third album, How We Connect-- sounds like Mirrored-era Battles covering "Cherub Rock" at a space shuttle launch. Matt Johnson and Brian Porter's dueling guitars spit blowtorch sparks, as Patrick Gough's frantic drumming drives the track's escalating energy. Like any band making punk music in D.C., Imperial China's sound pays subtle respect to its local forbearers; you can hear traces of Fugazi in Porter's hollered vocals ("Think I'll live forever!"). But those comparisons only go so far. As the intrepid energy of "Limbs" affirms, Imperial China are charting a course for some as-yet-unexplored piece of the sky.

*[] Following its limited edition “Record Store Day” release, Anywhere‘s (The Mars Volta, Minutemen, Triclops, etc.) self-titled debut will officially make its way to U.S. stores on July 24th through ATP Recordings.

*[press release] Seattle's Night Beats and Costa Mesa, CA's TRMRS release new music on a split 7" that is out now. Night Beats' new song "Messiah" is a slow swirling dirge of garage psychedelia while TRMRS' "Good Time Blues" is a bluesy fuzzed-out surf rock nugget. A co-release between Volcom Entertainment and Resurrection Records, the split 7" is limited to 1000 copies. Artwork by Dusty Dirtweed.

Volcom Ent Vinyl Club (VEVC) is an annual - 6 release - subscription based split 7inch vinyl series that is currently in its fifth year, with a Melvins/Totimoshi split, and a Kurt Vile, Wino and Jennifer Herrema collaboration already out this year. Future 2012 VEVC releases include a Nu Sensae/Useless Eaters split and a CSC Fuck Band/Grant Phabao Afrofunk Arkestra split.

Sleep Announce Handful of US Shows

[press release] Following a near month-long stretch of European live dates, currently underway, stoner metal icons SLEEP will play four special U.S. shows next month in Florida, Washington and California. The performances come in celebration of the epic deluxe reissue of Dopesmoker released via Southern Lord Recordings earlier this month. Entirely remastered from the original smoke-encrusted Ampex reels, the reissue features an unreleased live recording of one their greatest live performances -- "Holy Mountain" from San Francisco's I-Beam in 1994 -- as well as a brand new artwork by long time SLEEP artist Arik Roper.

Dopesmoker stands as one of the towering achievements in recent metal history: a mesmerizing, intoxicating, and incredibly complex composition that remains unrivaled in the evolution of stoner metal. In a recent review, Alarm Magazine christened it “a monolith of metal,” MSN echoed the sentiment calling the record, “one of the most influential stoner/doom albums ever recorded,” while Pitchfork crowned Dopesmoker “Best New Reissue” noting, “it's an hour of adventure and momentum, where the lumber and the repetition somehow always push ahead. At a moment when black metal reinventers and D-beat revivers seem to dominate large sections of the heavy music world, maybe the thought of a resin-voiced singer intoning for an hour over riffs that wrap into themselves and drums that aim ever for infinity seems boring. But no matter how many times they had to record or rehearse ‘Dopesmoker’ to master it, or no matter how much pressure London placed on them to make something more commercial than personal, SLEEP sound as if their very existence depends upon the successful exercise of this weed ritual…. This record's influence on substance, style, and simple ambition within heavy metal has long outlived the band that made it.“

Catch SLEEP live this Summer and check out footage of the band’s pre-Roadburn rehearsal below.

"UNSANE's experience shines: this album is a distillation of their anger, a smart and nuanced look at negativity that reminds their audience why they are some of the masters of dystopian hardcore." -

"It goes without saying that UNSANE have never made for an easy or comfortable listening experience; with Wreck, established fans have great reason to maintain their faith, while newbies may well have just found their new favorite band." - ALTERNATIVE PRESS

Quick Notes: The Afghan Whigs, Melvins/Hammerhead, Josh Homme/Mondo Generator + More

*[] Last night, the reunited Afghan Whigs delivered their first performance in 13 years on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. With help from ?uestlove, the band ran through their new cover of “See and Don’t See” for television proper before revisiting the Congregation track “I’m Her Slave” for the web. Take a gander below.

The band has 28 tour dates on the horizon, kicking off tonight at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom. You can find the full docket on their website.

*[] A new Melvins Lite track titled “A Growing Distaste” can be streamed below. In addition to appearing on the bands new album “Freak Puke” (out June 05th;) it will also surface on a split 7″ picture disc with Hammerhead. Amphetamine Reptile Records will be putting out the 7″ as part of the Post Moral Neanderthal Retardist Pornography art and music show.

*[] Nick Oliveri revealed that his former Queens Of The Stone Age, etc. bandmate Josh Homme will guest on the upcoming Mondo Generator release. Oliveri recently told Dean Delray about the collaboration in the following interview:

In other Homme news... Homme has done an infomercial for the new Scissor Sisters album “Magic Hour“. You can watch that HERE.

*[] What’s next for The Flaming Lips now that their blood-soaked Record Store Day vinyls are in the hands of some very rich fans? How about a Guinness World Record attempt for the most concerts in one 24-hour period? Duh.

The current record is held by Jay-Z, who played seven concerts in seven cities in 2006. Wayne Coyne and co. intend to one up Hov on June 27th, when they play eight shows across the American South. And so you can follow along, MTV will stream the record setting attempt to coincide with the O Music Awards. Wayne Coyne explains via press release...

“Like when the Sex Pistols did their one and only American tour, the weird mid-south (Memphis to New Orleans), has something very absurd about it when contrasted with radical visionary musicians. … Elvis and Jazz were at one time radical, but are now mainstream tourist attractions. … I don’t remember if I was asked or if I volunteered. … But, I’ve accepted the job of, not DRIVING, but commandeering the Magical Mystery Merry Prankster bus. … I’ve accepted the attempt at breaking the world record of performing 8 shows in 24 hours. And I’ve explained to the music freaks at MTV, VH1 and CMT that I am not a host. … But, I always liked the way Jerry Lewis would get all sweaty toward the end of his yearly telethon. … To play and sing Flaming Lips songs at 8:00 in the morning… Well… I’m open to new experiences…”

Wayne Coyne explains via video HERE.

*[] While his former Chili Peppers have kept busy — what with being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and headlining a string of summer festivals – John Frusciante has kept relatively quiet. But on July 9th, the eccentric axeman will return with a new solo EP.

Letur Lefr marks Frusciante’s first release since 2009′s The Empyrean. As Invisible Movement reports, the five-track effort “will most likely feature a song with R&B singer Truth Hurts (a.k.a Share Watson), after she revealed she was collaborating with John for his new project back in December of 2011.”

*[] The 11th annual Austin City Limits Music Festival runs October 12-14th at Zilker Park in Austin, Texas. The lineup boasts Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jack White, The Black Keys, Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Florence and the Machine, Avicii, Bassnectar, Iggy and the Stooges, The Avett Brothers, The Roots, The Shins, Weezer, M83, Gotye, The Afghan Whigs, Crystal Castles, Andrew Bird, M. Ward, Alabama Shakes, and Childish Gambino.

Also playing are Tegan and Sara, Rufus Wainwright, Thievery Corporation, Umprhey’s McGee, Metric, Stars, Delta Spirit, Polica, Esperanza Spalding, Steve Earle, Patterson Hood, Gary Clark Jr., Die Antwoord, Big K.R.I.T., Zola Jesus, The War on Drugs, Black Lips, Los Campesinos! Freelance Whales, Caveman, Tennis, LP, Two Door Cinema Club, Trampled By Turtles, Oberhofer, Bombay Bicycle Club, Old 97s, Antibalas, Lee Fields & the Expressions, Father John Misty, Ben Howard, Michael Kiwanuka, and Patrick Watson.

Three-day and single-day passes are now available via the festival’s website.

*[] An official multi-camera live video of Mastodon performing “All The Heavy Lifting” can be seen below. The footage is taken from the groups February 11th stop at the Brixton Academy in London, England.

*[press release] On May 29, At A Loss Recordings will unleash the vinyl edition of Avenger, the critically-acclaimed studio offering from California desert rock trio, TOTIMOSHI. Championed by Rock Sound for its “smart and uniquely wonky brand of hard rock that’s sometimes bluesy, sometimes sexy, sometimes spaced out but never anything less than completely compelling,” and commended by The Obelisk for its absorbing variations, noting: “It’s dissonant but melodic, dirty and clean, noisy but engaging, structured but open,” Avenger is another eclectic milestone in the band’s already winding catalog of sonic ingenuity.

And now, Avenger will finally be available on vinyl! The pressing is limited to 500 copies and available on either opaque purple or black vinyl. Pre-orders are available HERE. Avenger was produced by Toshi Kasai (Melvins, Shrinebuilder, Tool), mastered by John Golden (Melvins, Mike Watt, OM) and includes appearances by Dale Crover (Altamont, The Melvins, Shrinebuilder), Brent Hinds (Mastodon) and Scott Kelly (Neurosis, Shrinebuilder).

Avenger is fresh and crisp, with much to digest…. a thoroughly satisfying album.” —

“Though it aims for the throat, Avenger consistently seeps into the soul, proving that Totimoshi remain one of the most original forces in modern metal.” — Exclaim

“Comparable to classic rock, but fused with enough modernity to grant relevance over nostalgia, TOTIMOSHI is a steady and robust rock unit, at times flirting with enough progressive adventure to negate expectations of typical rock repetition.” — Stereokiller

*[press release] Due to popular demand, The Sword have produced a 1,000 piece limited edition vinyl single of “Hammer of Heaven”. The 7 inch picture disc will also feature a version of “Ebethron” recorded live at Austin’s legendary Stubb’s Barbeque. Roger Waters' "The Wall" Concert Gets Bigger

[] Roger Waters isn’t ready to break The Wall just yet – in fact, he’s going to make it even bigger. According to Waters’ official site, the tour won’t end in Philadelphia as originally planned, but will instead move up to Canada, where it will have a rousing finale in Québec City at the Fields of Abraham on July 21st.

“We’re gonna do The Wall show,” Waters states in his latest video blog, “but it’s gonna be completely unlike any of The Wall shows we’ve done anywhere else in the world on this tour.”

As Pollstar reports, the new wall “will be more than two-times as large as the wall that’s been constructed” previously, and will scale out to “more than 250 meters.” This marks the second time Waters has done this; in 1990, he arranged a similar project for Berlin to celebrate the fall of the actual Wall. So, why Québec City?

“I’ve always loved playing in Québec,” Waters continues. “The Québécois are a very passionate and musical people.”

Check out the full video HERE.

Tickets are currently reserved for those who have already purchased a festival pass for the Festival d’été de Québec. However, there’s currently an online registration going on today at for a drawing that will choose winners to purchase wristbands for the concert. That registration closes at 9 p.m. CT. Also, Waters’ official site will have a limited number of priority tickets available today.

Foo Fighters Play SNL/Cast Party with Mick Jagger + More

[] Foo Fighters had quite the wild Saturday: They headlined The Bamboozle in Asbury Park, NJ just hours before backing Mick Jagger on Saturday Night Live. And yet they still had enough energy to serve as the house band for SNL’s late-night cast party at Rockefeller Center. According to a contributor who attended the party, Foo Fighters performed covers under the moniker Chevy Metal.

You can watch footage of Foo’s performing The Stones’ “Miss You” with Jagger, Joan Jett’s “Bad Reputation” with Parks and Recs’ Amy Poehler, and Joan Jett’s “I Love Rock N’ Roll” with cast members Kristen Wiig, Jason Sudeikis, and Andy Samberg (via Antiquiet) HERE.

Few would argue that these are the glory days of Saturday Night Live. But if there’s one thing the late-night staple has been solid at as of late, it’s their musical guest bookings. This season alone featured Radiohead, Jack White, The Black Keys, Coldplay, Drake, Bon Iver, Florence and the Machine, Usher, The Shins, Sleigh Bells, Foster the People, and Robyn. And to cap it all off, last night’s season finale boasted the biggest performance of ‘em all when Mick Jagger appeared alongside Arcade Fire, Foo Fighters, Jeff Beck, and The Strokes’ Nikolai Fraiture.

Jagger first teamed up with Arcade Fire and Fraiture (who played bass) for a rendition of The Rolling Stones’ early single “The Last Time”. Later, Jagger and Foo Fighters ripped through The Stones’ “19th Nervous Breakdown” and “It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll (But I Like It)”. Finally, Jagger joined Beck to perform an original blues composition about the presidential election.

Arcade Fire also appeared at the end of the show to help send off cast member Kristen Wiig. With Jagger, Steve Martin, Jon Hamm, and fellow SNL cast members singing along, the band performed The Stones’ ”She’s A Rainbow” and “Ruby Tuesday”.

Replay all of the performances HERE.

Beck Performs in LA + Announces New Single

[] Ahead of this weekend’s appearance at Sasquatch!, Beck performed a warm-up gig at Los Angeles’ El Rey Theater on Tuesday night. His first live performance since October 2011, the acclaimed singer-songwriter tackled a career-spanning 24-song set, which leaned heavy toward Odelay and Sea Change. Unfortunately, no new songs were played, not even his recent takes on “Corinna, Corinna” or “I Only Have Eyes For You”.

You can watch fan footage of “Lost Cause” and “Guess I’m Doing Fine” HERE. The concert’s setlist is also below.

The Golden Age
Lost Cause
End Of The Day
Dead Melodies
Sunday Sun
Where It’s At
Black Tambourine
Think I’m In Love
Soul Of A Man
Paper Tiger
Modern Guilt
Soldier Jane

In other Beck news...

Guess we spoke too soon. Beck may not have played any new music during his concert in Los Angeles last night, but he’ll soon release a brand new single through Jack White’s Third Man Records. The latest installment in the label’s Blue Series, “I Just Started Hating Some People Today” b/w “Blue Randy” will be released on 7″ vinyl and digitally on May 28th. You can stream clips of both tracks at Third Man’s website.

According to a press release, “both tracks were recorded in 2011 while Beck was in Nashville working on new material for his long awaited next album. The songs spontaneously came together at the Third Man studio on Beck’s final day in Nashville.”

It’s worth noting that both Beck and White will appear at this weekend’s Sasquatch! Music Festival in George, Washington. Perhaps they’ll debut one of these tracks on stage? Let’s hope.

The Stone Roses Perform First Concert in 16 Years

[] The Stone Roses performed their first concert in 16 years at Parr Hall in Warrington, England on Wednesday night. The surprise gig was announced just hours beforehand and tickets were distributed for free to anyone who had a piece of band merchandise or tickets to one of their upcoming summer shows.

According to NME, the band delivered an 11-song set, comprised mostly of material from their 1989 debut. Unfortunately, the band did not preview any of the “three or four” songs already written for their upcoming reunion album. You can find a 30-second clip of “Made of Stone”, as well as a recording of “Sally Cinnamon” taken from the soundcheck HERE.

The Roses will formally kick off their summer tour with a pair of gigs in Barcelona on June 8th and 9th. Check out their full tour docket below.

Kyuss Lives! Discuss Lawsuit + More w/ Rolling Stone

[] In March, former Kyuss members Josh Homme and Scott Reeder filed a federal lawsuit against ex-bandmates John Garcia and Brant Bjork over their involvement in the band Kyuss Lives!, alleging "trademark infringement and consumer fraud." The lawsuit came as a surprise to Garcia and Bjork, as well as the band's longtime fans – Reeder actually played some shows last year with Kyuss Lives!, and a YouTube clip appeared to show Homme enjoying a Kyuss Lives! set in France last July.

Homme formed Kyuss with Garcia and Bjork in the late Eighties, with several bass players coming and going (Nick Cocrell, Nick Oliveri, and Reeder) and Bjork eventually being replaced by Alfredo Hernandez. In the process, the band issued several albums that are considered stoner-metal classics: Blues for the Red Sun (1992), Welcome to Sky Valley (1994), and ...And the Circus Leaves Town (1995). After Kyuss split in 1995, Homme went on to form Queens of the Stone Age (which saw him reunite with Oliveri for a spell).

It was announced last year that Garcia, Oliveri, and Bjork would perform Kyuss classics under the moniker Kyuss Lives!, with guitarist Bruno Fevery taking Homme's spot. All seemed merry in Kyuss Lives! land until the aforementioned lawsuit was filed – and to further complicate matters, Oliveri exited the group.

Garcia and Bjork have largely kept silent since the lawsuit's filing, but they recently agreed to answer questions from Rolling Stone over email. Here is the complete exchange:

Did the federal lawsuit filed by Josh and Scott in March come as a surprise?

John Garcia: Completely. Originally, the suit was only filed by Josh. Scott was not even involved; just recently, he has decided to join Josh in the suit.

Brant Bjork: Was I surprised? As far as Scott is concerned, yes, I was very surprised. I wasn't surprised by Josh at all. They don't want to mention that they trademarked the name Kyuss after I left the band, assuring that I had no rights in Kyuss' future. They're both accusing John and I of doing something that they actually did themselves. Their inner conflict is this: both Josh and Scott want control and money from Kyuss Lives!, but they don't want to participate and they ultimately don't want us to exist. The double standard is unbelievable.

Due to Nick's [Oliveri's] personal legal issues, Scott played multiple shows with us last year. The shows were great, the fans were stoked and we gave Scott the salary he asked for, which made him the highest-paid member of the band. We have a lot of respect for Scott as a musician and had a lot of respect for him as a person. Based on the fact that John and I jammed with Nick at Hellfest in 2010, we asked Nick to be the bass player and its quite obvious Scott is bitter about that. Scott's stance is weak and shameful.

In the summer of 1987, I started a band with my best friend, Chris Cockrell. This band would ultimately become Kyuss. Kyuss was a name I found in a Dungeons and Dragons book called Fiend Folio. Kyuss is a big part of my life as a musician, and when someone asks me formal questions about Kyuss, or wants to discuss the band casually, I can't help having a point of view that is naturally inherited by someone who is the original founding member.

Josh filing this lawsuit is not an issue of today … it's an issue that began over 20 years ago. That is why the band was short-lived. Josh and I were the creative force within the band and after the completion of our second record, Blues for the Red Sun, we developed an opposing view on how the band should exist and operate. In 1992 Josh discovered publishing, which is the financial revenue stream for songwriting. After that, he wanted to write all the songs. As a drummer I couldn't make him play my songs. I wasn't going to compromise my heart and soul and play drums for Josh to make money in a band I started. So I left the band. I was a confused, angry and sad 19-year-old idealist who sacrificed my love of my band for what I believed in. Two-and-a-half years later, Josh would break up the band after John confronted him about the same thing; his need to control the band for personal gain.

After Kyuss broke up, Josh started a new band where he could have ultimate control. This band was Queens of the Stone Age, and with this band Josh arrived at the level of success and rewards that he was in pursuit of with Kyuss. It's very clear that Kyuss was not meant to be his vehicle for personal gain. Queens of the Stone Age was the effort that was proper for bringing him his fame and fortune. For years, understandably, there has been a misconception that Kyuss was Josh's band. I assume this is the result of his controlling the songwriting on the remaining records. This untruth has affected Josh's ability to accept historical fact to the point that he truly believes he is entitled to dictate what we do with a band that we are all responsible for. The simple fact that we got the band back together and successfully brought Kyuss back to the people without him has left Josh's ego bruised. Even though I respected the music Kyuss made without me, I swallowed the bitter pill of watching the band carry on after I left, and now Josh is getting a taste. I dealt with that taste by learning the music business and carrying on with new bands and a solo career for the last 18 years. Josh is dealing with this taste by taking John and I to federal court. I've known Josh since I was 10 years old. How a person who has experienced the richness of life that he has would take the time to take his past band members and friends – guys who directly contributed to his ability to go on to have his own successful career – is sad. I feel sorry for him. But no, I'm not surprised. This is a classic conflict fueled by power, control, money and greed and this lawsuit leaves no question who is part of the problem and who is part of the solution.

"one of the year's most thrilling rock records, a concise collection of songs that split the difference between the arena-ready anthems of Bruce Springsteen and the raw, full-throttle energy of hardcore punk." - Rolling Stone

"Japandroids, "The House That Heaven Built" If this house really exists in heaven, it must have a basement where the Vancouver duo's indie-rock rager plays on repeat - and late, great punks from Kurt Cobain to Jay Reatard pound their fists to the "oh-oh-oh-OH-oh-OH-oh-oh!" chorus." - Entertainment Weekly's "Summer Playlist"

"The band has said that the album was made with joyous audience sing-alongs in mind, and Celebration inspires that and more: On your headphones, Japandroids are a fun walk to the subway. Live, they're a pop-punk revelation." - Time Out NY
