Quick Notes: The Mars Volta, Radio Moscow, Sleep + More

*[] The Mars Volta frontman Cedric Bixler-Zavala has taken the time to explain the title of the bands newly-released album, “Noctourniquet“. You can watch his explanation below:

*[] Earthless, Premonition 13 and Radio Moscow are all featured on a new limited edition 3-way 12″ split release from Volcom Entertainment. The pressing is limited to 1500 copies on red vinyl. It can be streamed/purchased HERE.

*[] The new reissue of Sleep‘sDopesmoker” is due to arrive in stores on May 08th through Southern Lord. This latest version of the album has been remastered by From Ashes Rise guitarist Brad Boatright. It will also feature revised artwork from Arik Roper and a bonus live version of “Holy Mountain” taken from a 1994 set at the I-Beam in San Francisco, CA.

*[] Silversun Pickups will perform on the Jimmy Kimmel Live! outdoor stage on May 8, the same day that their new album, Neck of the Woods, will be released in stores. The record was produced by Jacknife Lee (U2, R.E.M., Snow Patrol) and the lead single, "Bloody Mary (Nerve Endings)," arrived at radio earlier this week. The band will be touring throughout 2012 and 2013, though so far they have only announced a few festival dates for the summer.

*[] "Seeing Katy Perry as a soldier in 'Part of Me' really makes me think that we need to start a war so she can go die." - Fucked Up frontman Damian Abraham (aka Pink Eyes) is not a fan of Katy Perry's new video, in which she plays a Marine.

Abraham followed up that Tweet with "Yes I'm aware my last tweet was kinda dumb but so is glamorizing war to sell records to idiots. Katy Perry Still Sucks"

*A message from Engineer Records... "Another busy band is the now acoustic duo Elemae, having recently toured the UK they decided to step it up a notch when they returned to New Jersey and have been playing gigs like crazy with a new video and record on the way soon. We are also excited to say that they will be back in the UK on tour in October this year! In the meantime, check out a live Elemae acoustic video from their last visit...

The Stone Roses Announce Headlining Shows

[] The Stone Roses will play a number of headline shows in Europe this summer, as well as a host of previously announced festival appearances and their three headline shows in Manchester's Heaton Park (June 29-July 1).

The band will play two dates at Barcelona’s Razzmatazz club on June 8-9 as well as a show at Amsterdam's Heineken Music Hall on June 12. The two dates at Razzmatazz are being put on by the people behind the Benicassim Festival, which happens a month later, from July 12-15. The Stone Roses will play Benicassim as well as V Festival, T In The Park, Optimus Alive, Fuji Rock, Tennent's Vital, NorthSide and Hultsfred.

The Stone Roses play:

Barcelona Razzmatazz (June 8, 9)
Amsterdam Heineken Music Hall (June 12)

The Stone Roses recently revealed full details of their Heaton Park reunion shows, with Primal Scream, Beady Eye and Plan B heading up the support bills on each of the three nights from June 29 to July 1.

Bob Marley's backing group The Wailers will play third on the bill on each of the three nights, as part of a bill The Stone Roses have described as a "mix of the legendary and the new". Primal Scream will be joined by The Vaccines and Kid British on the opening night, while Saturday's bill sees Professor Green and Hollie Cook slated to perform before Beady Eye.

Plan B will play on the closing night after The Justice Tonight Band – which comprises The Clash's Mick Jones, Pete Wylie and The Farm – and Dirty North. The latter, a dub-influenced band from Manchester district Wythenshawe, were namechecked as a band to watch by Stone Roses drummer Reni during the band's reunion press conference in October.

Baroness' John Baizley Speaks on New Album

[] Baroness vocalist/guitarist John Baizley discussed the groups forthcoming album in an interview with In the interview he cautioned that the album is less aggressive than past works, offering:

AltPress: What are the biggest curveballs on the record so far?

JB: It’s easy for me to say that, and it’s hard for me to say that, because I don’t want to say, like, “Oh you aren’t going to like this.” That’s not what I’m going for. We need to do different things, so you’re going to hopefully notice a heightened sense of melody and a more developed and focused type of song for us.

I’m totally over writing hard music to perform. It’s fun in that it pushes you to the boundaries of your technical ability, but more recently, the challenge has been pushing out the boundaries of our songwriting ability. We had to say, “Sometimes a simpler song is a better song,” because you pay more attention to the song.

There’s less of an aggressive edge on the record as a whole—nobody’s going to miss that when they listen to it. It is less aggressive than our former music. That is almost definitely a result of us getting older and our interests broadening, but that’s always going to happen.

That’s not to say at some point we won’t go, “Okay, now that we’ve softened up a bit, we need to get harder.” It’s just, whatever we said on the last record has been said so recently, we need to do something different.”

Release details for the bands new outing are currently pending.

Heaven Debut "Falling Apple" Video + Swervedriver Tour Support

[press release] NYC trio Heaven, comprised of Matt Sumrow (The Comas, Dean and Britta, Ambulance LTD), Mikey Jones (The Big Sleep, Adam Franklin, Snowden), and Ryan Lee Dunlap (Fan-Tan), has premiered a new video for "Falling Apples" with Paste. The single is taken from their self-titled 7" released this year with Goodnight Records. After a week of stand-out sets at SXSW '12, Heaven will continue to tour throughout the country with London-based Swervedriver. The band will perform songs from their Heaven 7" and a forthcoming 7" split with Adam Franklin & Bolts of Melody, set for a May 1st release.

Sumrow and Jones created Heaven in the wake of touring and recording with other artists. Last summer, they both worked with Adam Franklin, of Swervedriver, and Sumrow has been busy playing with Dean Wareham for three years, scoring Andy Warhol films and revisiting Galaxie 500 tunes. In the most perfect combination, they have put their own stamp on psychedelia and new wave, giving a nod to the artists they have respected and played with, while also creating something modern and unique. With art and passion, Heaven brings you a loud psychedelic show. They must be both seen and heard.

Heaven Live in Concert:

3/30 Washington DC - Rock and Roll Hotel
3/31 New York City, NY - Bowery Ballroom
4/02 Cleveland, OH - Grog Shop
4/03 Chicago, IL - Bottom Lounge

"Heaven is a Brooklyn dream syndicate planted firmly between the 1985 crossroads of Paisley Underground shamble and noisepop blast... an abrasive blast of sheet-metal feedback doing its noble best to hide some spectral, Spectoral harmonies." - Village Voice

Maps & Atlases Debut "Fever" + Tour Dates

[press release] Barsuk Records is excited to debut "Fever" (available for streaming below), the new single off the upcoming Maps & Atlases full-length Beware & Be Grateful, out April 17th. "Fever" premiered via SPIN, who said the track "[allows] Davison's rounded, distinctive bray to float triumphantly over a direct, breezy concoction that feels indeed like a fever passing." The band has also curated their own blend of Intelligentsia coffee, the Chicago based roaster, available exclusively with the pre-order for the album HERE.

Maps & Atlases will embark on a headlining tour this spring in support of the sophomore LP. The tour kicks off in their hometown, with a May 11th show at the Metro in Chicago, and wraps up on June 19th at Amsterdam Hall in St. Paul. Earlier this month, the band headed on a brief tour, which included a successful run at SXSW.

The album - which follows the Chicago-based band's acclaimed 2010 debut, Perch Patchwork - was recorded last year in a series of week-long sessions at Omaha's ARC Studios with producer Jason Cupp (Nurses, Good Old War) once again behind the board.

Since their formation in 2004, Maps & Atlases have captured the indie imagination with their extraordinarily artful amalgamation of polyrhythmic beats, elaborate melodies, and post-rock ingenuity. The band toured hard from the get-go, honing their kinetic time signatures and inventive energy through countless live shows as both headliner and alongside such artists as Broken Bells, Frightened Rabbit, Circa Survive, Cults, and RX Bandits.

Wet Nuns Ready Record Store Day Single

[press release] Fresh off the back of being hailed as one of NME’s top 20 “Bands To Watch for 2012” and tipped for greatness by Arctic Monkeys’ Matt Helders, Wet Nuns are set to release an exclusive double A-side single on 7” vinyl for Record Store Day on April 21st. The band will also play an in-store at Rough Trade East to celebrate the release.

The 7” record will combine Wet Nuns two singles ‘Heaven’s Below’ and ‘Throttle’, and is everything you’ve come to expect from this big-riffing, crowd-surfing, cursing, death-blues duo, with their trademark stomach-churning guitars and downright ugly drumming stamped all over.

Having been on the road since February, including as support to Pulled Apart By Horses, Wet Nuns continue their trail-blazing tour with added dates at The Great Escape Festival, Crooked Ways Festival and Simple Things Festival this May.

If you haven’t witnessed a Wet Nuns show yet, then you’ve missed something damn awe-inspiring. The two-piece from Sheffield have been blowing venues around the UK apart with their hell-bent explosion of songs about “women, death and beer”.

Tickets for remaining dates of Wet Nuns ‘Throttle’ tour are available NOW.

Quick Notes: Screaming Females, Death From Above 1979, Nine Inch Nails + More

*[] Screaming Females release their new, Steve Albini-produced LP, Ugly, on April 3rd via Don Giovanni Records. You’ve already heard the lead single, “It Means Nothing” [watch the awesome video below]; now check out another ferocious number called “Expire” (via Stereogum). It sort of sounds like an Arctic Monkeys Humbug-era track.

DOWNLOAD: Screaming Females – “Expire” [right click, save as]

*[] For Record Store Day 2012 (April 21st), Death From Above 1979 will release a limited-edition vinyl reissue of their one and only studio album, 2004′s You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine. As Exclaim points out, Last Gang Records will print 1,000 copies on pink vinyl with “rad” packaging. The reissue will be available exclusively in record stores across Canada, though a select number will also be available for purchase on Last Gang’s website.

Below, watch the band perform “Little Girl” and “Blood On Our Hands” at Coachella 2011.

*[] Quality footage of Nine Inch Nails performing “Down In It” on late 80′s/early 90′s TV show “Dance Party USA” has been making the rounds online. You can watch it below.

Trent Reznor has commented on the video, adding: "Many years ago, a young and naive Nine Inch Nails were asked what TV shows they'd be interested in appearing on. As a joke (and likely drunk), they thought of the most absurd choice they could come up with at the time. They were then informed their bluff had been called and were actually booked on said show... They hopped in their Honda Civic touring vehicle (hatchback) and traveled many miles to (I think) NJ for the big show. They had a laugh making fun of the people, their fashion choices and hairstyles. Life was good. Years later, the internet is discovered... There's a moral in there somewhere. Come to think of it, Skrillex may indeed owe me some publishing on that hairdo..."

*[] Good things come in threes. Jack White's Third Man Records recently celebrated its third anniversary. At their anniversary party, they gave away-- get this-- the world's first 3 RPM record. No, not 33 RPM. THREE RPM. That means it's intended to spin on a record player at three revolutions per minute, which is pretty much impossible. The record contains every "Blue Series" single the label has ever released.

Here's how Third Man describes the thing:

"The world's first 3 RPM record is a study in contradictions-- it's cut at the slowest speed yet it plays faster than anything you've ever heard. It's a compilation of 7 inch records but it's packaged like a 12 inch. But the 12 inch sleeve is made like our 7 inch sleeve (as it is one continues piece of paper folded in half and put into an acetate sleeve). A bit like a snake eating its own tail. It comes with three bumper stickers yet there is no bumper. We gave it away for free yet given what it has fetched on eBay it is proving to be fairly valuable. It's easy to play but impossible to hear. You put your finger on it to slow it down, but this is no easy task (as evidenced by these YouTube videos) and we estimate it would take 333 days of 33 hours training per day for your finger, hand, and arm muscles to spin at a continuous speed of 3 rpm for X hours and X minutes."

*[] On April 21 (aka Record Store Day), Texas psychedelic warriors The Black Angels will release a new 7" on Blue Horizon, "Watch Out Boy" b/w "I'd Rather Be Lonely". As you can hear, the B-side is quite a new look for the band, trading their usual scuzz-bomb guitars and acid-damaged vocals for something more jangly and flat-out pretty (not a bad thing). Stream it HERE.

The Coathangers Debut "Go Away" Video + Tour Dates

[press release] The Coathangers have premiered the new video for "Go Away." Shot and edited by director Jason Travis, the video for "Go Away" is not only a look into the dynamics the girls share as band mates and friends (even while on tour), but also a glimpse into how hard they work to keep it all going.

The third video from 2011's Larceny & Old Lace (Suicide Squeeze Records) features the presence of a ghostly Julia Kugel singing over the looping, shifting, and reversing imagery which speaks to the often plaintive temporal nature of life, relationships, and tolerance for complacency. Shooting took place over a period of a week as Travis accompanied the band on tour from Atlanta to New York as they mangled stages in major cities along the way. They even stopped by a rural farm to pet horses, shoot guns, and catch a unique perspective of life.

As previously announced, the Coathangers are set to release a limited edition single (500 black, 250 gold) that will be available worldwide on April 17 via Suicide Squeeze. The single features the Coathangers' "Smother" as the A-side and Davila 666's "No Crees Que Ya Cansa" as the AA-side, along with artwork from Westin Glass of the Thermals.

Catch the band on tour now!

Electric Flower Group Release Sophomore EP + Video

[press release] Electric Flower Group, the visceral realist duo consisting of guitarist/singer Imaad Wasif and drummer Josh Garza, released their sophomore EP, entitled EP II, via Narnack Records yesterday. The offering showcases the band expanding their sound beyond the rawness of their first EP to explore the dimensions of depth and width. In celebration of the release, the group will be performing an intimate in-store set at Origami Vinyl in Echo Park, CA on Friday, March 30th at 7:00p. The show is free and will be the band's first performance since their return from the SXSW Music Festival.

Today the duo also premiered the music video for the the EP's leading track, "Eclipsed", via Consequence of Sound. Watch it below.

In Electric Flower Group, rock is not dead but realized. The chemistry between Wasif and Garza is undeniable. These are two true modern rockers that can and will break sound barriers. They create the kind of loudness that makes you glad, with songs that have an immediate and tangible impact on the contemporary pop musical landscape. Artifice is devalued; pure emotion is king.

"Eclipsed" is a standout single, part loose metaphor, part nod to Dylan's 'Don't Think Twice' and Big Star's 'September Gurls,' yet carving a space of its own. "Cocoon" is a markedly weirder track; the repetition of the mantra-like lyric "To see your love come shining" gives way by sudden schism into an unexpected extraterrestrial soundscape, veering between CAN-esque Mesmer beats and a guitar angularity akin to This Heat, all the while carrying the current of a song unlike either.

EP II is proof that music today can be cinematic and conceptual without the complications of over-instrumentation as demonstrated within the modern overarching epic. Conversely, it moves against the wake of new-fangled blues stomp rock and the limits of its obligatory two-piece bands. Side two of the EP is dedicated to a cover of Scott Walker's dark symphonic ode to S&M, "The Electrician," done to such effect that it cuts to the core of the original, its primitive brightness reaching far out into other corners.

If the world ever catches up to them, we can then be sure that times really have changed, that the end is nigh, that "the circle" is unbroken. Electric Flower Group are on a journey through a modern kaleidoscope of rock 'n' roll, transcending mainstream influence and incorporating strong minimalist elements into their modern psychedelic music. In Garza's pummeling beats and Wasif's vocal and guitar exorcisms, we are not listening to just two men, but to an orchestra of the damned. Electric Flower Group wakes the ghosts of rock's most daring days, while never following them.

Electric Flower Group will be performing at the Moon Block Party at the Desert Daze Festival on Friday, April 20th. For more details on the show, click HERE.

ÆGES Ready "The Bridge" For April Release

[press release] With the decline of Western civilization comes a new pilgrimage of musicians looking to carve out their fates from the wreckage of the past. ÆGES are the new breed of California’s creative drifters. ÆGES was founded by Chicago-raised Larry Herweg (Pelican, San Angelus), former Seattleite Mark Holcomb (Undertow, Shift, San Angelus), multi-continent Kemble Walters (The Rise, The Blank Faces, Juliette and the Licks), and the sole California native Tony Baumeister (16, Cutthroats 9).

Converging in Southern California across state lines and international waters, ÆGES use their world-wise musical expertise to rebuild the archetype of the heavy rock band. There’s a definite element of desert rock in ÆGES sound--the low-tuned guitars, the sludgy sun-baked riffs, the deceptive pop hook buried in the molasses-thick instrumentation. Yet the diverse backgrounds of the band members create a unique blend of perspectives and a resultantly fresh sound. The common sonic thread between the four individuals in ÆGES--their tenure in bands that explored the darker side of hardcore—manifests itself in the aggressive tonalities of their sound. But their divergent paths, both geographical and musical, broadened the emotional palette beyond the angst of their earlier bands. Their debut full length, “The Bridge”, is set for release via The Mylene Sheath (Caspian, Junius, Constants) on April 17th, 2012. The album was produced and engineered by the bands own Kemble Walters at The Canshaker Studio in Malibu, CA, and mastered by Mark Chalecki at Little Red Book Mastering (Omar Rodriguez Lopez, Goatsnake, Megadeth).

The new millennium ushered in a new, revitalized era of artistic integrity for LA. We saw it in the age of the acid-hazed ‘60s, the age of the nihilistic Regan-era punks, and the current age of abandoned archetypes of a failed economy. It’s creative optimism in a time of hopelessness. It’s the music of ÆGES. - Brian Cook

Quick Notes: Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi, Silversun Pickups, Delta Spirit + More

*[] Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi has issued a new update on his ongoing fight against Lymphoma. Here’s what he had to say:

“Hiya, a little update on how it’s all going:

Well, I’ve had the last dose of chemotherapy so hopefully my body will start to get back to normal soon, the steroids were the worse. I’ve now got three weeks of radiotherapy coming up which I’m told can be very tiring so we’ll see.

A big thanks to Ozzy and Geezer for coming over to England, it was a big incentive for me, we managed to work most days and have some great new tracks. And, importantly thanks again for your kind messages, hope to be seeing you soon." - Tony

*[] As previously reported, Silversun Pickups will release their Jacknife Lee-produced album, Neck of the Woods, on May 8th via Dangerbird Records. Seattle radio station 107.7 The End today premiered the first track from the album, entitled “Bloody Mary”. With lyrics like “If we grew up together/you would find it’s not the same,” it’s a clear example of what frontman Brian Aubert previously stated was a driving force of their third LP: “I wanted to see what built me.”

The track will be available on iTunes starting Monday.

*[] Delta Spirit’s music video for “California” captures the spirit of being a young punk in 21st century America. Angry, defiant boys and girls living on the fringe, drinking smoking, and engaging in sex and anarchy while whiling away their nights at underground shows. That is, however, until they go home the next morning, wash the grime and gunk of rebellion off, and sit down for a wholesome, albeit emotionally detached family breakfast. But, hey, who among us could actually fight the crushing influence of the man 24/7? Watch the video below.

The band’s self-titled third album is out now via Rounder Records/Concord.

*[] Opeth‘s Mikael Akerfeldt and Porcupine Tree‘s Steven Wilson have sat down with Guitar World to discuss their upcoming Storm Corrosion project and more. You can watch some footage of that over at

Storm Corrosion‘s forthcoming self-titled debut will arrive in stores on May 08th through Roadrunner.

Marriages Debut "Ride In My Place"

[press release] Red Sparowes offshoot band Marriages premiere a new song from their forthcoming debut today courtesy of The track "Ride In My Place" is culled from their new recording, Kitsune and is available to download/stream HERE.

Back in February, Marriages released the first track, "Ten Tiny Fingers" which is available to download/stream below. Watch a video teaser for Kitsune featuring the band at work in the studio HERE.

Marriages is a new band comprised of Red Sparowes members Emma Ruth Rundle (vocals, guitar), Greg Burns (bass, synthesizer) and David Clifford (drums). Their sound is a singularly sensual kind of heavy, dramatic rock, but perhaps the most stark contrast to their other band, Marriages employs vocals in their songs. Their music is also considerably darker and more experimental, drawn from a wide range of styles and ideas. Emma's breathy, understated delivery provides a focal point - the eye of the proverbial storm. A haunting presence, as elusive as it is alluring, her voice is a shore upon which waves of overdriven bass, thunderous drums, and cosmic guitars and synths swell and crash.

Kitsune is their 6-song debut release, a short introduction of an album whose undeniably epic proportions suggest massive things to come. Recorded with the formidable Toshi Kasai (Melvins, Red Sparowes, Tool) at the controls, Kitsune presents a collection of poignant, emotionally-charged tracks that wriggle free of easy classification. The comparisons are diverse; Cocteau Twins and Zola Jesus would appear to be as influential as Boris and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. The songs came together quickly as the band wrote and played their first shows in November 2011 and wrapped recording in January 2012.

Album opener "Ride in My Place" sets the tone, immediately revealing the undulating, reverb-cloaked darkness at the band's core. Sounding not unlike PJ Harvey fronting an overdriven rendition of Pink Floyd's "Echoes", the fittingly-titled song arrives as a fully-formed companion piece for expansive landscapes, perhaps traversing the vastness of the American west. Hardly overstaying its welcome, the track soon gives way to "Body of Shade", whose cryptic "My body gone forever..." lyric suggests a sort of transcendence echoed in the music itself -- Clifford's steady backbeat, the tense rhythm and the swirling interplay of synth and cascading guitars recalling the finer moments of The Verve's early recordings. Opening with a celestial keyboard loop and quickly gaining weight, third track "Ten Tiny Fingers" builds upon a heavy dirge-like rhythm punctuated by Rundle's vocals, which by now clearly occupy a place among esteemed peers such as Chelsea Wolfe and label mate Lisa Papineau. The song's cryptic, claustrophobic lyrics, contrasted with a loose (but by no means less thunderous) atmosphere and sense of impending collapse bring to mind The Cure, circa Pornography. The next track, "Pelt", is borne from the decaying remnants of "Ten Tiny Fingers". A menacingly hypnotic three-minute meditation on minimalist doom, it serves as the perfect introduction to the distorted, bass-driven hard rock and wailing psychedelia of instrumental track "White Shape". Seven-minute closer "Part the Dark Again" is a song whose cinematic scope recalls precisely the kind of grandiosity Red Sparowes are synonymous with, taken to its logical extreme. The impassioned, struggling-against-the-odds sentiment of the vocals ("Part the darkness in my heart", "Don't say it's nothing...", etc.) takes things over the top emotionally, culminating in a soaring, melancholic riff that grinds to a halt far earlier than you'd expect. Throughout, Rundle unassumingly steps to the forefront, showcasing her unique talents as a guitarist often overlooked within Red Sparowes' three guitar onslaught.

Kitsune is an exciting debut release from a band well aware of their potential, harnessing the skills to fulfill it. Marriages are an expansive, visionary development, a unique combination of elements, a sound signposting the path ahead... Kitsune will be available on LP, CD and download via Sargent House on May 1st, 2012.

The Flaming Lips Record Store Day Album Contains Artists Blood + More

[] As previously reported, The Flaming Lips’ Record Store Day compilation, The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends, features collaborations with Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Bon Iver, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Nick Cave, My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, and Neon Indan, among others. As Psych Explorations of the Future Heart points out, a few copies of the record will also pack these collaborators’ blood. (Don’t act surprised.)

“What I’m going to try to do — and I’m collecting stuff for it as we speak — is I’m going to try to make a record that has every person’s blood in the record,” Lips mastermind Wayne Coyne explained to MTV Hive. “I don’t have everybody’s blood just yet, but I collected quite a few vials of blood and it’s actually sitting in my refrigerator as we speak.”

Coyne added he’s taking the “same concept” of a picture disk and putting “little bits of everybody’s blood in the middle of this record. Like a glass specimen thing.” He didn’t say whose blood he’s already collected, but noted that only “five or six [copies] will be made and will likely be sold to… interested rich Flaming Lips people.”

Dope Body Announce "Natural History" Details

[press release] Rarely Unable is over the moon having teamed up with Drag City for the first time to unleash Dope Body, the lovely brothers of Baltimore, who have erected a fresh slab of sound fit for release May 22nd. They call it, Natural History. This is the Drag City debut for these fellows, sure to give hope to all bodies world-wide, both natural and enhanced.

Dope Body formed in December-of-2008-Baltimore as an experiment in musical instincts, jamming and writing the simplest one-part/one-riff/one-minute songs that were the first thing to come to mind (most ended up on their first tape 20 Pound Brick). They then set up a novelty basement show in this super-small basement, with the great intention of trying to stoke primal hardcore thrash vibes in both the music and audience, which at that point in time was kind of lacking in Baltimore (mostly dance-party-Wham-City-absurdist-style). It was a great mess of an experience with drunken beer flying, shirts tearing, glass breaking, strings snapping, amps frying, cigarette smoke asphyxiating... so much fun that a silent acknowledgement was made: don't stop doing this, something feels too right about it. Dope Body strove to play that kind of show over and over again since then, somehow maintaining a work ethic, being fairly prolific without the threat of taking themselves too seriously.

Dope Body are road doggies, funsters, and gleeful pummellers of basement and attic parties alike, wide-eyed fanatics of the craft that the more reasonable among us might mistake for insanity (it isn't entirely so). Dope Body is a spasm of styles and directions, showering sparks from a half-melted thickness. They writhe under their own influences and experiments, swinging and swaying from guttural chugging to charming riffs n licks within the confines of a single tune.

Natural History is Dope Body in possession of what might be their most COMMERCIALLY ACCESSIBLE album ever – especially if your idea of "commercially accessible" is Half-Machine Lips Moves/Psychic, Powerless…/or "Salad Days"-era punk. They have well and truly honed their own off-kilter sound, replete with heavy walls of rhythm, raw electronics and vocals that grunt and yelp with an animalistic ferocity.

Dope Body are bloodthirsty and ready to take the US, UK, and EU by storm with both Natural History and promised live appearances - lock up your daughters, your boyfriends, your kids - keep your own body in check - no one body's the same, but everybody's body is sure to get weird when it comes into contact with Dope Body!

The Black Keys' Patrick Carney Speaks out Against Sean Parker

[] Patrick Carney of The Black Keys has labelled Spotify board member and Napster founder Sean Parker an "asshole" who he claims "steals" royalties from artists.

Speaking to US radio station WGRD, the blues rock duo's drummer said he disagreed with statements Parker made at SXSW in Austin, Texas earlier this month. At the music festival and industry conference, Parker claimed that Spotify would make more money for the music industry than iTunes over the next two years. Carney said in response:

"He's an asshole. That guy has $2 billion that he made from figuring out ways to steal royalties from artists, and that's the bottom line. You can't really trust anybody like that."

Carney continued: "The idea of a streaming service, like Netflix for music, I'm totally not against it. It's just we won't put all of our music on it until there are enough subscribers for it to make sense.

Carney added: "Trust me, Dan [Auerbach, frontman] and I like to make money. If it was fair to the artist we would be involved in it. I honestly don't want to see Sean Parker succeed in anything. I imagine if Spotify becomes something that people are willing to pay for, then I'm sure iTunes will just create their own service, and they're actually fair to artists."

*[] Post-punk legends Mission of Burma will continue onward with their decade-long resurgence on July 9, when their new record, Unsound, is released by Fire. Check out the first cut, "Dust Devil".

Unsound follows Burma's excellent 2009 album The Sound the Speed the Light. The band will also embark on a short tour of the state of Missouri, which counts as their first dates in the state since reuniting, as well as the Territorios Sevilla Festival in Sevilla, Spain this May.

04-04 St. Louis, MO - Firebird
04-05 Columbia, MO - Mojo's
04-06 Kansas City, MO - Middle of the Map Festival

*[] At The Drive-In were met with a bit of fan outcry when it was initially announced that their upcoming 10″ yellow vinyl pressing of their 1999 EP, “Vaya“, would only be available at the “Coachella Valley Music And Arts Festival“.

It appears as though Fearless Records have listened to the fans as they have since announced that another limited pressing of the effort will arrive in U.S. stores and online starting June 05th with more details to come.

*[] Following a series of strange video footage posted to Tumblr, Liars have offered a release date for their new album. The as-yet-untitled record, which follows 2010's Sisterworld, is out June 5 on Mute. It was produced in part by Mute founder Daniel Miller, whom the group called their "idol."

According to a press release, the band is "following their hearts" on this album, which is a more collaborative work than previous releases, and was written at "an isolated cabin in the mountains." Frontman Angus Andrew said, "If we aren’t confusing people, it's not us. If we aren't confusing ourselves with what we do, then we've failed."

*[] dredg performed a special set at the Avalon in Santa Clara, CA this past Thursday, March 22nd. The performance saw the band play their entire 2005 album “Catch Without Arms” and more. Fan-filmed footage from the set has begun to hit the net and can be found HERE.

Meanwhile, the group have some rather ambitious plans ahead of them in regards to a new music video. Vocalist/guitarist Gavin Hayes shared the following on that via his Twitter:

“Shooting a ‘new’ video-doesn’t matter which record (b-side). What would you guys like to see? We’re going to tally votes. Top pick wins.”

*[] Live audio of Cave In vocalist/guitarist Stephen Brodsky and Converge drummer Ben Koller performing together has arrived online. You can listen to them play “Friday The 13/8” together below. The audio was recorded during a February 04th, 2012 show at the Saint Vitus Bar in Brooklyn, NY.

*[] In October, the men of JEFF the Brotherhood recorded a session for Upstairs at United, a special series of analog recordings captured inside the storied United Record Pressing Plant in their hometown of Nashville, Tennessee. And on April 21, Record Store Day, the fruits of that straight-to-quarter-inch-tape, three-song session — the Brothers Orral played until the tape ran out — they'll release an 11-minute cover of Hawkwind's "Master of the Universe." Cronise, guitarist Kyle Shutt, bassist Bryan Richie, and new drummer Santiago “Jimmy” Vela III will commence recording their fourth album in late June with a projected release date of fall 2012.

The new studio album will be supported by extensive global touring that will stretch well into 2013. As previously announced, The Sword will be appearing at Metallica’s Orion Music and Arts Festival in Atlantic City, NJ on July 23-24, 2012.

John Franck, SVP of Marketing for Razor & Tie comments, “We’re delighted to welcome The Sword to Razor & Tie. They’re a special band and unique signing for us. We’re looking forward to making an incredible record together and continuing to grow the band’s brand on a global level.”

*[press release] Electric Jellyfish continue to blaze a path across the States on their 2012 US tour and are headed to the Northeast for some killer shows. Highlights include two shows with Aussie legends feedtime - one at Cake Shop in lower Manhattan on 3/31, and the other at Maxwell's in Hoboken the following night. They'll also be playing two back-to-back shows with labelmates MYTY KONKEROR - 3/28 at BAR in New Haven with psych-jammers Spectre Folk, and 3/29 at the Ding Dong Lounge in NYC with Bob Crusoe and Sugarm. Their final show also features a killer lineup with Noveller and Tall Firs joining them at Death By Audio on 4/3.

"Trouble Coming Down" limited edition tour cassettes keep getting plucked from the merch table, but we should still have some left by the time they get out here. In the meantime, watch the band play a blistering version of their new single below at last week's South By Southwest WFMU showcase. Then listen to the entire show from the WFMU archives.

*[press release] Carina Round's forthcoming album, Tigermending (May 1 via Dehisce Records/The Orchard), is now available for pre-order HERE and on iTunes. Two mixes of the exclusive, non-album track "Got To Go" are available with the pre-order. Pre-orders through Topspin will be accompanied by a Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins) mix of the song titled "Got To Go (Billy Corgan 2000 BC Mix)" while iTunes pre-orders will be packaged with alternate version "Got To Go (LA Song)."

Round just wrapped up a North American tour as both the opener and female vocalist for Puscifer. The Edmonton Journal called Round "a revelation" and described her as "part Katy Perry cutie, part damaged soul, part defiant rocker," the Orange County Register described Round as "an adventurous English rocker who marshals her demons in much the same howling, dynamic manner as Patti Smith" and the Pittsburgh Post Gazette said she displayed "her sweet-to-fiery goth rock flair."

The 11-track release, round's first full-length album in five years, was recorded in Los Angeles by Round and Dan Burns (Rachel Yamagata, Andrew W.K.) and also features a collaboration between Round, Brian Eno and Dave Stewart on the song "The Secret of Drowning."

*[press release] Incase presents the third and final installment of the Room 205 episode with Cold Showers, featuring a gritty performance of "I Don't Mind."

Jonathan Weinberg
, Jessie Clavin, Brian Davila and Renee Adams formed Cold Showers in late summer 2010, (with recent addition of Chris King supporting on guitar). Their pop songs are shaded by darker overtones, offering despairing minimalist lyrics that bring a sense of a bleaker tomorrow, today. The dreamy, angular and sometimes aggressive guitar work, layered with primitive percussion and low flying synthesizers coalesce in a driving darkwave sound. Satisfying influences from Ultravox and Savage Republic to Joy Division, The Pixies and Los Angeles-era X, Cold Showers create the ideal soundtrack to fall in-and-out of love.

Special thanks goes to Cold Showers for making this episode of Room 205 possible. We couldn't have made such a lovely episode come to life without your songs, goodwill and friendship. Thanks also to director Michael Reich, set designer Tamarra Younis, audio engineer Jonathan Gilbert, DP Jeffrey Peters, and editor Forrest Borie.

Nick Oliveri Leaves Kyuss Lives! + Speaks on Legal Troubles

[] Legally embattled musician Nick Oliveri has announced that he has walked away from the also legally-beleaguered Kyuss Lives! reunion. The news via a very candid interview over at

During the interview Oliveri also discussed his aforementioned legal troubles stemming from a July standoff with the Los Angeles police.

Replying to the possibility of facing jail time, he stated:

“Umm, yes… and no. Hopefully no. But yeah, you know there’s some… the thing with that is… It’s a really bad scene, because I uh… Basically it comes down to, I can’t talk too much about it because I have a court date coming up next month.

You can ask my lawyer…. He’ll tell ya. I have a really good lawyer and he’s taking great care of me. The thing is that I screwed up because I didn’t… When the police came to my house, which nobody in my house called, a friend of ours came over and we didn’t open the door for her. And she called the police — which is absurd.

So it’s a bad scene right now, it’s a bad scene, and I don’t even know how I’m supposed to say that… But basically at the end of the day I screwed up cause I didn’t open the door. I was like ‘I’m not going to open, I don’t have to open the door.’ I didn’t think you have to open the door… (laughs) You have to open the door. A robot came and knocked down my door. (laughs)

And I don’t mean to laugh because it was a bad scene but uhh, I just look at it like I pay a lot of rent. I want to be the king of my castle man, I want to be the king of my castle. I want to have the final say like when I come in and when I can go and who comes in and who doesn’t.”

When asked if drugs were involved, he stated:

“No, but there was uh, unfortunately they… I was in there for three and a half hours, you know, like not coming out.

You don’t think I wouldn’t have gotten rid of, flushed, anything I had, if I had something, you know? Like “I know they’re outside, I’m gonna save this!” You know like. (laughs)

I had just moved into this house and went on tour. Everything was in boxes and somehow, there was a little, little tiny, the smallest little amount of something.”

When quizzed if there was violence, he said:

“No, no. The whole thing about it was that we didn’t open the door. They wanted… she (their friend) was saying that there was some trouble inside you know…”

Speaking on the loaded gun found at his residence by the police, he mentioned that it was a gift from his deceased father and that he had kept it underneath his bed in case someone ever broke in his house. The full interview also touches on his firing from Queens Of The Stone Age and more and can be found HERE.

Japandroids Debut "The House That Heaven Built," Tour Dates + More

Celebration Rock will be available June 5th on Polyvinyl Record Co. Listen to the track HERE.

King recently talked to Pitchfork about recording the album, which was created in Vancouver at The Hive with engineer Jesse Gander, who they had previously worked with on Post-Nothing:

"On a lot of this new record, we actually tried to simulate the sound of what we thought the crowd would do during the songs," says King. "Dave and I were in the studio just screaming out as if we were in the audience at our own show."
