Quick Notes: Mr. Gnome, Sleeper Agent, At The Drive-In

*[read.mtvhive.com] Coveted thrift store finds always make for a good story, especially when it doesn’t involve a t-shirt from the ’80s that’s now ironic and too small. Take for instance Mr. Gnome’s B-side, “The Way,” which was largely constructed from a thrift-store organ the duo found for twenty bucks in Madison, Wisc. “I started messing around one night and found this one setting that reminded me of the Flaming Lips,” recalls singer/guitarist Nicole Barille. “I started free styling a few melodies over the simple chord progression, recorded the session onto a GarageBand demo and when it came time to record, used all of those ideas and tried to really layer up the vocals so that each part progresses until the end.”

Indeed, “The Way” is a lesson in vocal layering. The duo also messed around with electronic rhythms, a new thing for them. “We’ve always been into experimenting with every type of sound possible so this is just another side of what we do,” she says. “Lyrically, this song is a bit dark. There are moments in life where you may feel like you’re losing your mind and this was definitely one of those moments.”

Mr. Gnome’s new album, Madness in Miniature, is out now. Stream "The Way" HERE.

Child Bite Ready "Monomania" + Tour Dates

[press release] On March 27th Detroit's ominous touring machine Child Bite will be releasing their new album Monomania with Joyful Noise Recordings.

In the 19th century, the word 'monomania' was used in the psychiatry world to define a "single pathological preoccupation in an otherwise sound mind." The soundness of Child Bite's collective 'mind' could be debated, but, like all things in music, it depends on your definition of 'sound.'

"Monomania" is a stylistic quantum leap for this seasoned band. Now on their 6th official release, Child Bite's sound has developed into something... well, something quite sinister. Featuring session drummer Moshe Rozenburg (from DD/MM/YYYY), the band has never sounded so tight, unabashed, and just fuckin' gnarly. This is certainly the darkest and most mature effort we have seen from Child Bite.

"Monomania" is limited to a pressing of 500 10" records on bright green vinyl, featuring hand-made artwork screen-printed by singer Shawn Knight - who is well known for artwork in his own right, having worked with bands like Jesus Lizard, The Black Keys, Mastodon, Faith No More, etc.

The song "Begin the Hiss" was premiered today via IMPOSE. Listen to the song HERE!

The bright green 10" w/ instant MP3 can be purchased for $10 HERE!

The Diamond Center are saucer-eyed oracles lighting a path through the barren wilderness with their lush shimmery neo-psychedelia. They're dueling shamans healing and crushing with woozy, pulsing, charged, crackling creations pairing sanguine rustic vocals with a hint of spectral country noir and minimalist reverb-soaked guitars with bass, keyboards, and multi-manned percussion, all through warm hazy washed-out production. These are Native spirits traversing a moon-lit Texas desert. They've traded their horses for camels, interwoven their beads with bells, and laced their feathers with charms.

"It feels as if we could be dancing with some of the most romantic hellhounds out there, when Price is singing. She’s got them dogs up on their hind legs and they’ve got their front paws on her shoulders, going around the fires.” - Daytrotter

"With its slow, rhythmic beat, eerie vocals, and minimalist instrumentation, 'Wtt'...confidently and effectively builds tension and exhibits the strange, magnetic allure of The Diamond Center." - NPR

“a pulsing, washed out, surf rock…that houses just the right amount of old record fuzz and eastern psychedelia” - I Guess I'm Floating

White Denim Set to Headline JanSport Bonfire Sessions at SXSW

[press release] JanSport today announces its third annual Bonfire Sessions, a free outdoor concert series with music brought to you in partnership with Noisey, VICE’s music channel. The JanSport Bonfire Sessions bring music fans free events featuring bands and a bonfire under the big sky. The series will premiere Tuesday, March 13th at Mowhawk Bar on 912 Red River Street in Austin, TX with a free concert headlined by Austin foursome White Denim. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. and the showcase will start at 1:00 p.m. The event is 18+ to attend.

Hometown headliners White Denim have been at it since 2006, pumping out psych-garage bangers that harken back to the lost art of jam. Other bands in the line-up include Strange Boys, who simultaneously define and defy rock in 2012, post-punk band Bear Hands, hailing from the great borough of Brooklyn, and new kids Fly Golden Eagle, who present a new take on balmy, jangly indie pop.

In addition to the concert line-up, local artist Justin David Cox will create a unique poster for the Austin Bonfire Sessions, and concertgoers will receive limited edition silk-screened prints at the show. Cox is a designer and photographer living in Austin, Texas. He works out of a shared space in east Austin known as Public School.

Admission to The JanSport Bonfire Sessions in Austin is free, but space is limited. To receive event news before it’s published, RSVP HERE.

For up-to-date Austin Bonfire Sessions event information, including where to line up, visit JanSport’s blog Unzipped.

The third annual JanSport Bonfire Sessions will take place in five cities across North America. The idea is simple - a free outdoor concert featuring a locally adored band and a bonfire. This year, the live performances in Austin, Palm Springs, Toronto, Seattle and San Francisco will be captured on film for a new live music documentary series on Noisey.com. Posters for each event will be created by a local artist as well and will be given away to fans at the show.

Electric Jellyfish Release New Single + US Tour Dates

A message from Twin Lakes Records...

"This is a really exciting week for us as we'll be bringing you the new EP from Australia's Electric Jellyfish. We really can't get enough of these tunes, and we're thrilled to be sharing them with you. Recorded in a two-day session in Melbourne’s inner north suburbs in between shows on their 2011 Australian tour, "Trouble Coming Down" officially comes out this Thursday, March 1 as a very limited edition cassette (100) and download on Twin Lakes. The Electric Jellyfish 2012 US Tour kicks off this week as well, which will include SXSW appearances and shows with some of our favorite artists: Aussie legends Feedtime, Spectre Folk, Tall Firs, Noveller, Hank IV, Golden Boys, Carlton Melton, and Twin Lake's own MYTY KONKEROR. EJ frontman Michael Beach will also be making a special solo appearance at SXSW, with yours truly backing him on drums... stoked! You can see a full list of dates at the link above. Baroness' John Baizley Discusses New Album

[theprp.com] Baroness frontman/guitarist John Baizley was recently interviewed by Invisibleoranges.com and saw fit to discuss the bands forthcoming new album. The group have wrapped the recording of the outing with producer John Congleton (Modest Mouse, Black Mountain) once again behind the boards. Plans are currently being made for a summer release via Relapse.

An excerpt from the interview centered on the new opus can be found below:

“Can you describe the new album? Does it have a title yet?

It does have a title (which I won’t yet divulge), and it is finished and in production now. The new record at the very least is the beginning of a bridge towards something more unique and honest for Baroness. I’ve been more concerned with the composition and craft of songwriting this year than I ever have in the past. Historically, and with some regrettable hindsight, I see our old records merely as interesting pieces of music cobbled together with a significant amount of serendipity at play. We’ve gotten lucky at times, not so much at others.

We are a process-driven band, and we have been refining our process, while expanding our palette, throughout the past year. We wanted to present a challenging record, both for the band and its audience. I think we’ve been successful in that regard. We have developed our sense of melody, composition, and song-craft. At the end of the recording session, I felt like a child who had just figured out a challenging puzzle: proud of the fact that it had been achieved and excited at the prospect of delving into a new one. That’s what I always strive for; not so much an endpoint, rather a series of challenges in stages.

This record, I am sure, will challenge our fans in much the same way as it has challenged us. We have broadened the spectrum of our capabilities and textures, and we have taken some turns throughout the record which I believe are considerable risks. The act of risk taking whilst writing music is the reward in itself, and we are excited to get out on tour and see the way it comes alive onstage.”

Quick Notes: Fiona Apple, British Theatre (Oceansize), Arctic Monkeys + More

*[consequenceofsound.net] Fiona Apple has added another date to her comeback tour, and it’s the biggest one yet. The acclaimed songwriter will appear at New York City’s Governors Ball Music Festival on Sunday, June 24th. She joins a bill which already includes Beck, Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, Cage The Elephant, and Cults, among others.

Single day, two-day, and VIP passes are currently on sale via the festival’s website. Check out Apple’s updated tour schedule below.

*[theprp.com] British Theatre (featuring ex-Oceansize members Mike Vennart and Richard Ingram) have released a new three song digital EP via their Bandcamp.

*[consequenceofsound.net] Arctic Monkeys have unleashed a brand new standalone single, entitled “R U Mine?”, along with its corresponding music video. Check it out below. You might be hearing this on the band’s upcoming tour with The Black Keys, which starts this week.

*[consequenceofsound.net] Los Angeles and Copenhagen-based pop-art trio Gliss will soon return with their latest LP, entitled Langsom Dans. Much like the band itself, the album was an international affair, recorded in Los Angeles with the assistance of mixer Michael Patterson (Girl With The Dragon Tattoo OST, Social Network OST), and then mastered in Stockholm by Henrik Jonsson (Fever Ray, Lykke Li, The Knife). Production wrapped just two weeks ago, but already we have an early peak with the music video for the lead single, “Weight of Love”.

Directed by Paul Boyd, the video is a visual transformation of the track’s surreal, dream-like qualities. With the “Weight of Love” coming from all angles, Victoria Cecilia and co. take to the weightlessness of a psychedelic swimming pool, instruments and all, for just a moment of relief. Watch the video below, and prepare to bring the album poolside as 2012′s warmer months roll around.

*[press release] Today marks the release of And the Tears Washed Me, Wave After Cowardly Wave, Dreamend’s new album on Graveface Records. To celebrate, the album is streaming in its entirety all week long on Rdio.

And the Tears Washed Me, Wave After Cowardly Wave is Part 2 of Dreamend's telling of the true story of a serial killer's unraveling psyche, grisly misdeeds, and eventual death. After purchasing a personal journal of a serial killer at an auction in the woods, Ryan Graveface of Dreamend was inspired to tell the macabre story contained in its pages. Where Part 1, So I Ate Myself, Bite By Bite released in 2010 covered the first thirty years of the serial killer's life, Part 2 takes place after his initial taste for blood and ends with his death.

The album begins by throwing you headfirst into a whirling haze of buzzing basses, banjos, auto-harps, and heavily distorted vocals. The waves of sputters and buzzes periodically recede to reveal the album's folk-rock backbone, and are quickly built up again. The tales of two people run parallel to each other, the serial killer's told through the lyrics, and Ryan's through the pained ringings of crippled stringed instruments, the rattling of pill bottles used as makeshift percussion, and the analog groans of pedals, and synths that have seen better days. The album evinces melancholy at times, but even though it is what Ryan calls “real downer music,” there is still an air of triumph in almost every track – possibly the triumph over disaster. If anything, And the Tears Washed Me, Wave After Cowardly Wave shows that destruction can be embraced and rendered into an engine for creation.

"One of our favorite tracks of the year. The on face sprawling, sort of far off 'Ten Tiny Fingers' hooked us not only with its crushing enormous sound but with its soul." -- Blah Blah Blah Science

"Those of you who know Red Sparowes already, I can tell you that Marriages is a lot darker, and in essence, a lot more experimental, but I think most Red Sparowes fans will incline towards appreciating what this new band offers." -- Metal Assault

"Whereas the Nocturnes offered ethereal folk with a backbone on Aokigahara, Marriages' forthcoming album Kitsune has a tougher skin. But that certainly doesn't mean the raw strength of songs like 'Ten Tiny Fingers' come without a tidal wave of beauty. Here, they burn with more of an experimental fire and play between light and shadows. It's just as hypnotizing, if not moreso." -- Buzzbands L.A.

Greg Dulli Discusses Afghan Whigs Reunion w/ The Quietus

[thequietus.com] 2012 will be a busy year for Greg Dulli and the Afghan Whigs, with reformation gigs at All Tomorrow's Parties I'll Be Your Mirror festivals in both London and New Jersey, with the latter event featuring a line-up chosen by Dulli himself.

According to the frontman, there have been requests for a Whigs reunion for the past decade. But, he says, this time around "a perfect storm" resulted in the band getting back together. "The acoustic tour I did a year and a half ago, John Curley [Afghan Whigs bassist] came out with me for five or six of the shows, and then I saw Rick McCollum [guitar] last spring when I was on tour with Twilight Singers, he came to the show and we had lunch," Dulli explains.

Although Dulli and Curley did discuss the possibility of getting back together, the "perfect storm" was created when All Tomorrow's Parties boss Barry Hogan was left "a little bit of a bind" when Guided By Voices had to pull out of the May I'll Be Your Mirror. "So in a lot of ways, we were kinda stepping in to help someone out," Dulli said. The reunion soon snowballed, which means that we're going to be looking at a series of Afghan Whigs shows. "Then it turned into 'Ah, we'll play a few'. We’ll see. I’m imagining we’ll play more than four gigs. We’ll probably play 25-30 gigs, would be my guess. We’ve got five gigs now, and we’ll play at least another 20 gigs, I would imagine."

However, there will be no new material. "We never broke up the band for any reason other than we’d taken the band as far as we wanted to take it. We aren’t getting back together to make a new album. We’re doing this one time: see it now, or never see it again. That’s what’s going to happen here. We’ve always been friends so it’s not any kind of great thing of having to swallow your pride to get back in the room. These are my buddies, so we were never at odds in a friends relationship. We just wanted to do different things, so we split up, and when we’re done with this, we’ll split off again."

Who exactly will we be seeing in this incarnation of the Afghan Whigs? "Well, you’re getting the three of us [Dulli, Curley, McCollum], and you’ll have to wait and see who the other few people are," Dulli says. "Three guys started The Afghan Whigs, and three guys made all six albums. Those are the three guys you’re gonna see. We’re the only three guys who made all the records and did all the shows. And we are The Afghan Whigs. That who you’re gonna see: you’re going to see The Afghan Whigs."

Future of the Left Debut "Sheena is a T-Shirt Salesman" Video + More!

[press release] Future Of The Left’s new music video for the song entitled “Sheena Is A T-Shirt Salesman” is up on Spin.com. The song is the first single off of the Welsh rabble-rousers’ forthcoming full-length album, The Plot Against Common Sense, which will be released May 29th in the U.S.

“Sheena...” is approximately 125 seconds of semi-aroused rock band engaging fully with their instruments and shouting a lot, sometimes deliberately. Casual listeners are invited to enjoy it or leave the building.

The song is taken from the previously mentioned long-playing collection The Plot Against Common Sense, which is to be released on May 29th. Constituting 49.8 minutes of singing, shouting, slinking, smashing and (at times) sobbing, the album is the best thing the band have put their name to in this or any other dimension, a fact which is not open to debate.

The upcoming album is following on the release of the band’s Polymers Are Forever EP last fall on UK based Xtra Mile Recordings (Frank Turner, Against Me!). The EP scored high marks from Spin, Pitchfork, CMJ and sets the stage for what is to come. Future Of The Left will return to the U.S. stage for the first time in three years at Austin’s SXSW festival this March.

3/13 - Latitude 30 at 11pm (XtraMile Recordings Showcase)
3/14 - Latitude 30 at 2:15pm (New Music From Wales)
3/14 - Hotel Vegan/Volstead Lounge at 4:30pm (Brooklyn Vegan Day Show)
3/15 - Swan Dive at 1pm (Official Showcase)
3/16 - The Grackle (Exploding in Sound/Shifting Sounds/Austin Facial Hair Club present Grackle Rock)

Pink Floyd Release "The Wall" Immersion and Experience Editions + WIN A COPY FROM EIS!

[press release] EMI has officially released the Immersion and Experience editions of Roger Waters' opus, Pink Floyd The Wall, as the final installment of the recent Why Pink Floyd? reissues and extended releases. You can win one directly from Exploding In Sound below. The Wall remains Pink Floyd's biggest-selling release after 1973's legendary The Dark Side Of The Moon.

Released in November 1979, 'The Wall' topped the album charts in the US, France, Germany, Sweden and Australia. "Another Brick In The Wall, Part 2" - Pink Floyd's first UK single since 1968 - became a Number 1 hit, selling more than one million copies within weeks of its release.

Between 1980 and 1981, Pink Floyd staged 31 performances of The Wall in the US, UK and Germany. It was a spectacular show that included a 40-foot wall, constructed, brick by brick, across the front of the stage during the performance. In 2010 and 2011 Roger Waters toured a new production of The Wall to huge international acclaim. He was joined onstage in May 2011 at London's 02 Arena by guitarist, David Gilmour and drummer, Nick Mason. He continues to tour in the Southern Hemisphere and North America in 2012.

The Wall Immersion 7-disc edition includes a DVD featuring a film clip from the 1980 tour and a Behind The Wall documentary, plus, for the first time, CDs of excerpts from Roger Waters' original demos and work-in-progress versions of songs on the final album. Additionally, among these previously unheard versions are David Gilmour's original demos of "Comfortably Numb" and "Run Like Hell." The Immersion set also includes The Wall Live, compiled from the 1980-1981 original tour.

**EXPLODING IN SOUND ARE THRILLED TO BE GIVING AWAY ONE COPY OF THE 7 DISC IMMERSION BOX SET!! TO ENTER, SIMPLY SEND AN EMAIL TO DAN@EXPLODINGINSOUND.COM AND TELL US WHAT YOUR FAVORITE TRACK FROM "THE WALL" IS AND A FEW WORDS! WINNER WILL BE CHOSEN ON SUNDAY, MARCH 4TH, 2012. THE ALBUM IS OFFICIALLY IN STORES TODAY, FEBRUARY 28TH, 2012 AND ALSO AVAILABLE ON ITUNES [CLICK HERE]. SEE BELOW FOR BOX SET CONTENTS! Only one entry per person. Must be US resident.**

Both The Wall Immersion box set and Experience edition include a rare recording of "Another Brick In The Wall Part 1." A highlight for fans, this demo showcases the evolution of the final track. Additionally, "The Doctor" explores the origins of the landmark track "Comfortably Numb," giving further insight into Pink Floyd's early demo recordings.

Following on from the Immersion and Experience editions of The Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You Were Here, these new versions of 'The Wall' offer listeners a unique insight into another hugely successful chapter in the Pink Floyd story.

In 1978, after finishing Pink Floyd's Animals stadium tour, Roger Waters devised the concept for the album 'The Wall.' The album is a partly autobiographical story about a fictional rock star named Pink looking back at his early life and reflecting on the nature of fame and success.

Waters presented his band mates David Gilmour, Richard Wright and Nick Mason with an extensive demo of songs. Pink Floyd recorded their eleventh album 'The Wall' throughout 1979 in France, New York and Los Angeles, assisted by co-producer, Bob Ezrin and engineer, James Guthrie.

An adjunct to the sessions was the famous addition of a group of pupils from London's Islington Green School, who recorded their backing vocals ("We don't need no education...") on "Another Brick In The Wall, Part 2" at Pink Floyd's own Britannia Row Studios in London. This became the world's introduction to the album with the release of its first single, an instant success, accompanied by a promotional film which included several of the groundbreaking images from the story, including Gerald Scarfe's brilliantly realized marching hammers.

Pink Floyd: The Wall Immersion box set, Experience edition and Collectors 180g 2LP Vinyl edition will be released February 28, 2012 through EMI. The 2CD remastered Discovery edition is out now.

Maps & Atlases Announce Tour Dates!

[press release] Barsuk Records is excited to announce that Maps & Atlases will embark on a headlining tour this spring, in support of their upcoming full-length Beware and Be Grateful, out April 17th. The tour kicks off in their hometown, with a May 11th show at the Metro in Chicago, and wraps up on June 19th at Amsterdam Hall in St. Paul. Before this tour, they will head to South By Southwest in Austin, with a brief tour surrounding those dates, followed by a European tour.

Recently, the band released "Winter," the first single off Beware and Be Grateful. Rolling Stone premiered the track, saying "['Winter'] finds the band merging tuneful songcraft with tight, dense rhythms." The band also released a teaser trailer for the album, featuring the track "Remote And Dark Years," available below.

The album - which follows the Chicago-based band's acclaimed 2010 debut, Perch Patchwork - was recorded last year in a series of week-long sessions at Omaha's ARC Studios with producer Jason Cupp (Nurses, Good Old War) once again behind the board.

Since their formation in 2004, Maps & Atlases have captured the indie imagination with their extraordinarily artful amalgamation of polyrhythmic beats, elaborate melodies, and post-rock ingenuity. The band toured hard from the get-go, honing their kinetic time signatures and inventive energy through countless live shows as both headliner and alongside such artists as Broken Bells, Frightened Rabbit, Circa Survive, Cults, and RX Bandits.

The Melvins Reveal "Freak Puke" Details

[press release] The Melvins unveil the latest twist in their 29-year history with Melvins Lite, an additional incarnation of the band that finds founders Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover partnering with Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, Tomahawk) for a 10-song released titled Freak Puke (June 5, Ipecac Recordings).

The Melvins will be taping an episode of Last Call with Carson Daly at their Apr. 13 show in Los Angeles. Osborne will join Greg Gutfeld for another chat on June 28 on Fox News' Red Eye.

Introducing: NONAGON

Chicago post-punk trio Nonagon have released a brand new EP entitled People Live Everywhere. Four years since their debut, the band have returned with a ferocious blast of low end heavy convulsions and abrasive shouted vocals that'd make Ian MacKaye proud. The band may just be reaching our ears, but they've been playing in and around the Midwest for nearly a decade.

Comprised of Tony Aimone (The Blue Meanies, Taylor), Robert Gomez, and John Hastie, the band recorded People Live Everywhere, their fantastic five song EP over 3 days in the spring of 2011 at Kerguelen Studio, a one-room, all-analog facility in Astoria, NYC run by Justin Foley (The Austerity Program) who wielded the mics and turned the knobs. The record was mastered by the one and only Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering Service, and is appropriately available on 180g vinyl with a free download code.

Check out a stream of the entire record below, as well as a ridiculous promotional "commercial" from the band members. Download the track "Fresnel Lens" for FREE HERE!!

People Live Everywhere is a decidedly DIY affair. All planning, promotion, selling, and funding has been handled by the band themselves, and it would appear they're doing a great job.

Buzz Osbourne, who's been manning the ship since 1983, described the new work as "amazing in its noisy calm intensity," and there is a certain kind of stoic raging in this first taste.

*[consequenceofsound.net] San Francisco five-piece Sleepy Sun specialize in crafting slow, churning psych-rock burners, as exhibited by their last LP, Fever. As previously reported, the group recently flew out to the California deserts with producer Dave Catching (formerly of Queens of Stone Age/Eagles of Death Metal) to record their forthcoming full-length, entitled Spine Hits. Our first listen is album opener “Stivey Pond”, which finds the group returning to their signature darkened, minor-key aesthetic.

The track chugs along behind singer Bret Constantino’s road-weary howl, creating an ominous and vaguely sinister atmosphere. However, the dark clouds are eventually broken by a spacey bridge lifted straight out of the Pink Floyd handbook. The result is something that would sound perfectly at home on the Dazed and Confused soundtrack or in the car as you road trip to Haight Asbury. Check it out below. Spine Hits is due out April 10th via The End Records.

*[theprp.com] The first taste of music has arrived online from the upcoming project comprised of former Isis members Aaron Harris, Cliff Meyer and Jeff Caxide. You can check out a clip of the bass tracking from their recent demo sessions over at Yfrog.com. The outfit plan to release their name and more information on their plans shortly.

*[thequietus.com] Leeds metallic noise rock marauders Hawk Eyes have given us and our readers a sneaky listen to a new track called 'Skyspinners'.

The track is taken from their sophomore album Ideas which is coming out on Fierce Panda on March 26. We'll be running a feature on the young rascals in the coming weeks.

Puscifer's Mat Mitchell Interview by Scene in the Dark

[sceneinthedark.com] SCENE IN THE DARK was lucky enough to get a moment to speak to producer and guitar player Mat Mitchell before he heads out on the road with Maynard James Keenan and his wild, wooly, and wonderful ever-evolving project Puscifer. Check out what he had to say about life in the desert.

Jennie O (SCENE): Saw the Kimmel performance last night. Everything seemed to go really well. How did it feel?

Mat Mitchell (Puscifer): It was fun. It was really relaxed y’know, it felt like a club show. Which is new for us so we really had a good time with it.

SCENE: The audience was receptive to the new material?

Mat: Yeah absolutely.

SCENE: What’s it like to be in such a bafflingly fruitful desert out there?

Mat: It was great. Y’know Maynard draws a lot of attention from his other bands and getting to be a part of that is awesome.

SCENE: What were the advantages of being removed from the metropolitan environment for this particular process on this album?

Mat: It absolutely helped. You can hear it in the music. Getting away from the distractions and getting away from the excuses of having things to do and places to be allowed everyone to kind of focus and relax. It made the process go quicker and I think the quality was better.

SCENE: Maynard had said in regards to that there was less pressure on the process out there, that you wouldn’t necessarily push a take like you would in the studio, that you could take breaks to hike and things like that…

Mat: Yeah because you’re not looking at the clock. You’re not paying by the hour kind of thing. In that regard it was just way more relaxing and comfortable, that you’re not thinking about time. But at the same time, like I said before, it almost made things go quicker because you weren’t distracted by anything.

SCENE: How did it work for the group dynamic?

Mat: I think better because you kind of get a family vibe; Cause you’re having all your meals together, you go on walks together, it becomes more of a family thing.

SCENE: The first album had a lot of bravado and cheeky swagger and sexuality but this album seems to have a heroes journey feel to the sound, like a desolation and an existential humbleness, almost like the ideas are the result of battle scars, what was the motive behind this change of pulse?

Mat: I think just like any record its experimentation and figuring out what you want to say. The first record was more like you said: more sexual and groovy and this one, I’m sure part of it was the environment that we were working in, but it just kind of naturally turned into what it did.

Muse Offer Glimpse Into Recording Sessions

[NME.com] Muse have tweeted photos from inside their LA studio as they record the brass and string sections for their new album. The album, the follow-up to 2009's 'The Resistance', is scheduled for release in October 2012 and will be the Devonshire trio's sixth studio LP.

Writing on their official Twitter page, the band said they had just recorded some horns with "legendary players". They added, "Now some strings. This album is coming along nicely. Bring on the Autumn!"

Muse videographer, Tom Kirk also posted pictures from the LA sessions on his personal Twitter account. One photo is of Matt Bellamy working out an orchestral score with composer David Campbell, who has previously worked with Radiohead on '15 Steps' and U2's Broadway musical Spiderman: Turn Off The Dark.

Muse bassist Chris Wolstenholme has previously said that the band want to do "something radically different" on their new album.

Meanwhile, the band are nominated for Best Band, Best Live Band and Most Dedicated Fans at this year's NME Awards, which is taking place at London's O2 Academy Brixton on Wednesday (February 29).

White Woods Ready Debut Single + Coathangers Tour Dates

[press release] Suicide Squeeze is pleased to announce the debut single from White Woods.

Guitarist/vocalist Julia Kugel established her chops with Atlanta's The Coathangers, winning audiences over with her deceptively clever hooks and propulsive upbeat energy. But as the band put more notches on their touring and recording belt, it became clear that there was more to their repertoire than jagged guitar lines and infectious charm. Asserting her abilities as a thoughtful and nuanced songwriter, Kugel offers up her debut solo offering under the name White Woods. The project provides the kind of soulful introspective pop The Coathangers hinted at with songs like "Go Away", but delivered in a context without the juxtaposition of the band's barnburner garage rock numbers. The songs showcase Kugel's beguiling forays into forlorn Americana and smoky, subdued blues.

The single will be available as part of Suicide Squeeze's single series and will be limited to 500 copies worldwide (100 lavender, 400 black vinyl). The 2012 series boasts an impressive array of talent that also includes the likes of King Tuff, Nobunny, Wax Idols, Cloud Nothings, Juliana Barwick and Iron & Wine.

Track List:

A-side: "Where Did You Go" (Download)
B-side: Paper Cutout

About Suicide Squeeze Singles Series: In 1996, Suicide Squeeze began releasing 7-inch records as lifesblood, singles, mostly from Pacific NW bands appeared, documenting some of the most influential music of that time: Modest Mouse, Elliott Smith, 764-Hero, and Pedro the Lion: each played an important role. The label broadened its reach over the years (as well as its series of singles), continually releasing music by a diverse, yet select group of musicians, including Memoryhouse, JEFF the Brotherhood, Dirty Beaches, Bleached, The Melvins, of Montreal, HEALTH, Black Mountain, School of Seven Bells, and many more.

KScope Records Update: North Atlantic Oscillation, Steven Wilson, Gavin Harrison + 05Ric

Check out some highlights from KScope Records newsletter...

*Kscope presents... A Night at the Tabernacle: North Atlantic Oscillation & Mothlite live in London, Wednesday 2nd May

At the end of September Kscope hosted a special night at the Union Chapel in London. Nosound, Engineers, Bruce from The Pineapple Thief and Anathema all performed stripped back sets in front of a sold-out crowd at this breath-taking venue.

On Wednesday 2nd May Kscope will be hosting another evening, this time to celebrate the release of the new albums from North Atlantic Oscillation and new signings Mothlite. North Atlantic Oscillation will release Fog Electric on April 30th with Dark Age from Mothlite following on May 14th (more details are below).

The venue will be The Tabernacle in London’s Notting Hill and tickets are now available from the venue’s website.

*Fog Electric, the new album from North Atlantic Oscillation

North Atlantic Oscillation’s new album Fog Electric will be released on April 30th through Kscope. It was produced by Tony Doogan (Super Furry Animals, Mogwai, Teenage Fanclub, Belle & Sebastian). Fog Electric is the follow-up to Grappling Hooks, NAO‘s debut which received massive critical acclaim when it was released in 2010.

The title, taken from the lyric of the track "Mirador," introduces a stormy theme that runs throughout the record's sounds - in the crashing electronics, delicate lulls, mystery and hidden soul beneath the surface: a leitmotif also reflected in the typically stylish and dramatic artwork.

"It's an album about doubt and loss, but there's a counterbalancing sense of resignation and even optimism too," explains singer Sam Healy. "One of the main themes is that of searching for meaning in a scientific, post-religious world. Science is absolutely a force for good, but after it showed us that the physical world is all there is, and that far from stripping experiences of their mystery this revelation actually makes them more mysterious, it sort of left us to our own devices in terms of producing the unscripted, improvised drama that is life-minus-god."

North Atlantic Oscillation is the climactic phenomenon caused by fluctuations in the atmospheric pressure between the Icelandic low and Azores high; a clash of hot and cold. It seems a perfect tag. Fog Electric is an album of contrasts from a band of contrasts. Timeless rock influences collide with the latest laptop technology, amidst a combination of dark foreboding tones and blissed-out serotonin-fueled pastoral sweeps.

The album will be available on CD, vinyl and to download. The digibook CD and vinyl editions are now available to pre-order from the Kscope store.

All copies of the vinyl edition ordered from Kscope will come with a code to download the album and the first 500 orders will come with an exclusive, limited edition 7" single featuring the radio edit of 'Soft Coda' b/w a cover of 'One Good Reason' (by Bob Mould).
