SCUZZY THOUGHTS: Spook Houses come to us from Ridgewood, NJ, a town not necessarily known for breeding rock bands. These guys could just be the ones to change all that. Coming to my attention after a friend compared them to Fat History Month, I immediately had to see what Spook Houses were all about. Several months later and I'm just as obsessed with their full length debut Trying as the first time I heard it. The young quartet have created a record with a thoughtful desperation that never stays down too long. Album opener "Trying Pt. 1/Pt. 2" sets the tone of the record perfectly, a slowly uplifting that builds a lo-fi acoustic base and gorgeous harmonized vocals before the eventual ruckus peels its way to the forefront. Influences of early 90's indie rock are spread throughout their sound from guitar tones to recording techniques amid their slow burning slacker rock and vibrant rhythmic chugging of their rowdier songs. Trying is truly a record that is meant to be listened to in its entirety. Lucky for you, the band are offering the record as a "Name Your Price" download via their Bandcamp page. After you realize just how great this album is (and it won't take long), you can buy the LP or cassette from the same link.
I can't wait to witness Spook Houses live, and only hope they have lots of tour plans in the works.
