SCUZZY THOUGHTS: SLEEPIES' sophomore album Weird Wild World has flat out blown me away since the very first listen. One of the year's absolute best records, the Brooklyn based trio have masterfully created a dynamic record of punk and indie rock that never settles into one place for too long. From the raucous first single, "Seriously," a sarcastic ode that defines the band's warped punk attitude, to the anthemic mantra inducing "Waste Water," a song nearly impossible to get out of your head, Sleepies have made an album that is infinitely repeatable. There's big heaping doses of snarling punk (Cool Boy, Terra Firma), chaotic post-punk (Combat, Got A Way), and glorious early 90's influenced indie rock (Strange Feelings, Our Ways), all delivered with a clear sense of humor, exceptional lyrics, and a disarmingly casual aggression.

The band's live shows are not to be missed either. As a former Boston resident, nothing I've seen in Brooklyn has been able to compare to the Boston house show scene on the general rowdiness spectrum... that is until I attended Sleepies' album release party at the DIY venue Dead Herring. Packed with sweat soaked fans and buzzing with enthusiasm, the loft apartment venue exploded for Sleepies set, a great show and a beacon of hope for the Brooklyn rock scene.
