SCUZZY THOUGHTS: Hopewell have done it again. One of the most consistent bands in the alternative/psych side of spacey rock for over a decade, the band has returned with Another Music an EP of mind expanding exploration. Revolving around a collaboration with shoegaze pioneer Mark Gardener (Ride), the pair teamed up to cover Brian Eno's "Needle In The Camel's Eye". The true highlight of the record however comes in the form of the breezy "The King & The Canary," a swirling jaunt that opens with an ominous bassline and drug induced paranoia before quickly subsiding into a gentle haze and gorgeous melodies from Jason Russo and company. With experimentation never far from Hopewell's music, two of the EP's tracks are assembled from found sounds and excerpts of previous records, including a reworked version of "Over The Mountain," a stand out from 2009's phenomenal Good Good Desperation augmented by avant-garde saxophonist Mark Marinoff (Chemical Brothers). Hopewell take you on a journey through the five track EP that is best experienced by sitting back and watching it unfold.
The band don't have any tour dates scheduled at the moment, but we can only hope some will be springing up soon. Witnessing the band in the small club is always a great experience. For now you can watch the band performing "Needle in The Camel's Eye" below.
