[press release] A Place To Bury Strangers have premiered a new video for "And I'm Up" today at VICE. The video was directed by Karl Ackermann, brother to lead guitarist/vocalist Oliver Ackermann. Karl's vivid images present the beauty in destruction - a piece of foam disintegrating into a tesselation of nooks & crannies; rivulets of multicolored plastic melting over an action figure set ablaze; pinwheel fireworks spinning out of control, shooting off sparks into the darkness; bottlerockets blowing up everything within arm's reach.
Director Ackerman says of the video:
"For me 'And I'm Up' is about coming of age. Burning toys seemed like it'd be an apt metaphor, fun and easy to shoot, and cool to look at. My idea was to create what I called an Action Figure Destruction Derby, an ultraviolent toy commercial, a non-CGI 'Toy Story 4: Battle Royale.'
I'm an animator so figuring out how to film this required a couple paradigm shifts. Usually stuff doesn't move unless I tell it to but fire and robot toys don't listen to me. Filming became an exercise in setting up a situation where we had the greatest chance of catching something cool on camera.
Finding a good location was tricky. As a kid in Virginia, you could buy cigarettes from vending machines and burn and explode toys pretty much anywhere. As an adult in NYC, it's more complicated. I eventually found a location after a spending a few days with Google Satellite View and a Zip Car.
The shoot was tough but fun. I got a tremendous amount of help and support from friends. Hopefully they had as good a time working on this as I did."
A Place To Bury Strangers will return to the US with Bleeding Rainbow for a run of dates starting October 27 in Richmond, VA. The band will also play Austin's Fun Fun Fun Fest in November and headline appearances in Los Angeles at the Troubadour on November 6 as well as a hometown show at NYC's Bowery Ballroom on November 18.
