EIS Review: Wintersleep - Hello Hum

I will confess upfront, I am a huge Wintersleep fan. Really, I worship the band. I'd go so far as to say they are my favorite band in the world, currently. That said, their last album, 2010's “New Inheritors,” was an epic letdown. That's not to say I hated it, or it was awful, in fact I quite like several tracks. However, on the heels of “Welcome to the Night Sky,” it was underwhelming to say the least. It was easily their poorest album, and sometimes that spells doom for a band's future potential when you get to album #5. So here we are now, album #5, “Hello Hum.”

I'll keep the pretension to a minimum here. The album is absolutely stunning. I can't remember the last time I was this unprepared for a band's return to form in such glorious fashion. The moment “Hum” hits the speakers til the last verse of “Smoke,” this album does not let up or disappoint. I hate to sound like such a homer critic, but I truly love this album.

The band, it feels, really tried to mash up the best bits and pieces of each previous album. There are some spacey, post-rock moments similar to the debut album. Some extremely catchy song and verse like Welcome to the Night, and even some fantastic prog-rock moments that New Inheritors displayed. I really despise doing a song breakdown, so I'll just say “Hum,” “Nothing is Anything,” and “Someone, Somewhere,” are my favorite tracks. But in all honesty, I can listen start to finish every time, and never want to skip a second.

Bravo you beautiful Canadians, this may be the end all of albums for me in 2012. If anyone can top this, I'll gladly embrace.
