[press release] San Francisco psychedelic rock band ASSEMBLE HEAD IN SUNBURST SOUND released its long-awaited new album Manzanita yesterday via Tee Pee Records. Described by the band as "jangly and fuzzy and spacey and contemplative" and a record that "conjures the feelings of sitting on a hill on Saturday at sunset and considering everything that's great and beautiful and fucked up all at once," the record features nine colorful tracks of AHISS' kick ass Cali-psych. Today, Magnet premieres the brand new ASSEMBLE HEAD song "L.A. Sacrifice", saying "Assemble Head In Sunburst Sound holds true to the "sunburst sound" in its name, like hometown contemporaries Girls but with more shoegaze and less '60s-pop influence", and calls the song a "heady jam with bass hooks like Ride." Check out the Magnet premiere of ASSEMBLE HEAD IN SUNBURST SOUND's "L.A. Sacrifice" now HERE!
Recorded in Grass Valley, CA's Louder Studios (Howlin Rain, Melvins), Manzanita is the follow up to the band's 2009 release When Sweet Sleep Returned which was called "a fascinating blend of post-apocalyptic dread and blissed-out reverie" by Pitchfork and "space-traveling fuzzbox boogie" by the San Francisco Bay Guardian.
"Manzanita is a record a lot of us have wanted to make forever," says multi-instrumentalist / vocalist Charlie Saufley. "It's more Technicolor, more spacious, more varied in texture, and more tuneful than anything we've ever done. I think it reflects the differences in our interests, but it's also the product of navigating those differences-and finding the parts that fit-for almost ten years."
Critically admired and fan celebrated, ASSEMBLE HEAD IN SUNBURST SOUND delivers a one-two punch of psychedelic power choogle and lunar outpost chillout on Manzanita. The most realized document of the band's shape shifting powers yet, Manzanita ("little apple") is a gumbo of potent California psychedelic pop rock brimming and bubbling over with feeling, fuzz, soul, sunshine melancholy, feral ferocity and hook-laden mystery. The electrically colorful quartet, whose sound was once described as "re-envisioning Spiritualized as a jam band," creates what can be described as "post psych rock" that is at once pastoral, menacing, leaden and ethereal.
Or maybe the band themselves describe it all best: "Imagine you're alone, and [our band's] along and we're playing you a gig - our last glorious supper on this giant abandoned space freighter, just before we're ripped asunder in the gravity of giant planets. That's what we're going for."

"Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound is the combination of 1920s science fiction books, hallucinogens, and the west coast. If there were a soundtrack for Pranksters who went on a voyage in outer space, the Assemble Head would be first request." - DUSTED
