[press release] London-based Mazes will be making their American debut at SXSW with a series of shows ranging from their official showcase to DIY house parties, just like they do back home. Jangly guitars, fuzz-laden bass lines, punchy percussion and undeniable pop hooks collide with a youthful exuberance to great effect on A Thousand Heys, the debut full-length album from the UK foursome, due April 12 on FatCat Records. Brash, bratty and incredibly catchy, the album culls together a slew of new songs with tracks that first appeared on their much talked about back catalogue of 7-inches, splits and cassette releases.
Formed in Manchester in early 2009 Mazes began their life touring with Pens and Wavves before going on to share stages with bands such as Deerhunter, Thee Oh Sees, Sic Alps, Dum Dum Girls and Crocodiles. The quartet has quickly built up a following, equally for their enthusiastic live shows as their much as for their impressive output of material and influence on the scene. Part of the flourishing London D.I.Y. scene, also home to bands like Male Bonding and Spectrals, the Alan McGee-approved Mazes has demonstrated a real appreciation of that ethos and sense of community by putting out limited 7"s and 12"s of music they love on their labels.
"They make mutilated pop of the highest order, a bit like Big Star after falling inside Dario Argento's pool of barbed wire, from which they emerge covered in gore, yet smiling. They are awesome." - 20JazzFunkgreats.co.uk
"Feel-good fuzz-pop songs that are each little gems of witty slack rock, powered by a sly intelligence and insidious melodies." - NME
"Recalls early Guided By Voices, but with a slightly blues-y, classic rock feel all its own." - Pitchfork
