Red Fang - Best Band in Oregon

For the second year in a row, to celebrate July 4th, the Boston Phoenix has chosen their Best New Bands from each of the 50 States - and we'd have to agree with them on the Red Fang win.

Red Fang was chosen as best new band for Oregon

WHY THEM? Twenty years after thrash killed hair metal and 10 after stoner removed virtuosity from the mix, it’s heartening to see a band like Red Fang, which combines the fun, the chops, and the bulbous weight of all three. Looking like dorks but rocking with an admirably calculated abandon, they casually toss flaming firebird arpeggios and Mastodon-y turnarounds into an otherwise Fu Manchu–y boogie van. Bryan Giles’s Ozzy-like wail floats over the pro-ceedings when not stinging like a bee. Red Fang bring a beer-can-to-the-forehead glee and irreverence that is much needed in today’s metal vortex.

Other winners of interest include:
Stardeath & White Dwarfs - Oklahoma

Last year's winners included:
Portugal. The Man - Alaska
Torche - Florida

Pixies Meet Tarantino?

[Punknews.org] "In a new NME interview, Pixies vocalist and songwriter Black Francis has revealed that he is hoping to record the band's first new album since 1991's Trompe Le Monde. Francis told NME.COM that he would like to work on a film and music tie-in project:

The band needs to work with a film director. Quentin Tarantino or someone like that. It'd be like, 'Make some music for our film, you guys [Pixies] be the sound of the film'. Spread the word about the idea 'cos I think it's gonna work. We'd have to finally get sick of playing the old repertoire and go, 'Alright, fuck it. Let's play new songs in our set'," he explained. "But the only way we'd really want to do it is if it was really great. There's a fear that if we try to commit something to tape then even if it doesn't come out stellar, somehow those recordings will get leaked. The band is beloved by its audience, so we don't want to fuck it up.

This editor would like to suggest that maybe David Fincher is the right director for the Pixies."

Clutch have announced that the iTunes version of their upcoming new album "Strange Cousins From The West" will come with a bonus 10 minute 'up close & personal' video documentary. As previously reported, the album was recently pushed back to a July 14th release date through the bands own Weathermaker Music label. A December North American tour is also being prepared and will be announced in the coming weeks.

...Trail of Tour

New York, NY – …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead announce a headlining North American tour kicking off July 26th at Jelly NYC’s Summer Pool Party Series in Brooklyn, NY at the newly located 5,000 capacity Williamsburg Waterfront music venue. The tour also features performances at two major US music festivals: All Points West on August 1st and Austin City Limits on October 3rd. This announcement comes on the heels of the bands’ triumphant return from their wildly successful tour through Europe, Asia and Australia supporting the release of their new album The Century of Self, out now on Richter Scale/Justice Records.

The critically acclaimed album The Century of Self was released in February of 2009 on the band’s imprint Richter Scale Records and quickly became what many in the press have praised as the band’s return to form. SPIN awarded the album with a four star review, The New Yorker raved “…ferocious…a new brand of progressive rock infused with anarchic execution…” and Billboard proclaimed Trail of Dead “…has once again found its footing.” Following the album’s release, the band unleashed the music live on a coast to coast tour and The Washington Post described their set as “…glistening guitar arpeggios, epic dynamic shifts and yearning upward vocals.” The band wowed the masses each night of the tour which came to a close at the annual SXSW Music Festival in their hometown of Austin , TX . Trail of Dead ruled the week, playing show after show to rooms of packed fans and ended the festival headlining the SPIN Magazine Party in true …Trail of Dead raucous fashion with a set which many are still talking about today.

Don’t miss …Trail of Dead when they play in a city near you. For the most up to date info and to learn about newly added shows, head over to http://www.myspace.com/trailofdead or www.trailofdead.org.

Beck Stays Busy Doing "Stuff"

[Pitchfork.com] Right now, Beck is in the midst of overhauling his website, and he's using it to post all manner of cool stuff.

We told you about Record Club, Beck's ongoing project to get together with friends and cover entire albums over the course of one day. He's already two songs deep into the first Record Club full-length, the first Velvet Underground album. And now he's announced another ongoing project: the cheekily titled Planned Obsolescence, a weekly DJ set from Beck himself or from as-yet-unnamed friends.

Here's how Beck himself describes the project: "We are putting up a new section, a weekly DJ set, called Planned Obsolescence. These are mixes of what we're listening to, put together by myself or guest DJs. Please enjoy." Click below for the stream of the first mix.

"Autobahn Hologram", the first mix, leans heavily toward damaged synth music. Or, as Beck describes it, "a laminated miasma colliding on the bavarian trans expressway with american analog and voicemail emeritus... alabama nukes, rhineland jukes, pony tailed arch dukes, and the anatomically correct scapegoat..."

"Autobahn Hologram" is exactly as eclectic, jarring, and obscure as you'd expect a Beck DJ set to be. The mix starts off with a short endurance test: A couple of minutes of Pharoah Sanders' squawking free-jazz riot "Red, Black & Green". Kraftwerk's "Autobahn" also makes an appearance, as does Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark's cover of the Velvet Underground's "Waiting for the Man", a song that Beck himself just covered as part of Record Club.

He also adds in some surprising selections from Michael Jackson (a lo-fi demo version of "Workin' Day and Night"), the Pink Mountaintops, and Lee "Scratch" Perry's Upsetters. Also, someone's still listening to MC Paul Barman!

As Beck told us in an interview last week, he's also completed a full-length cassette-only cover of Sonic Youth's 1986 album EVOL for inclusion in a forthcoming Sonic Youth box set, and he's finished a collaborative album with French singer/actress Charlotte Gainsbourg.

Exploding In Sound Showcase Recap!

The first ever Exploding In Sound showcase is in the history books, and it went off with great success. Held at New York City's The Delancey, and featuring incredible performances from Gay Science (AKA Christian Langdon), Freedom Hawk, (Damn) This Desert Air, Gravehaven, and Hazard Adams, the show was a testament to the website, ROCKING! Terrible traffic, bad weather, and the death of a certain pop star couldn't stop the evening's festivities, as all five acts' sets proved this past Friday. Thanks to all who came, and a very special thanks to all who played. Hope to see everyone and more at the next show!

Gay Science AKA Christian Langdon set the show off with a terrific set of solo material played on both guitar and keyboard. Switching between the two, he played such favorites as "Rock and Roll" and the Exploding In Sound compilation track, "The Best I Never Had". Playing his first show in over a year's time, Langdon showed no rust as his incredible songwriting enthralled the audience. Sadly, I completely forgot that I had a camera until after his set was over, it was filmed, so I'm hoping to have that for everyone soon.

Taking the stage next was Virginia Beach's own Freedom Hawk. The East coast stoner rock saviors brought the club to a frenzy with fuzzy riffs at every turn. Traveling eight hours to be there on what should have been a four hour drive will take some of the energy out of a band, but this was not the case for Freedom Hawk! They blazed out incredible performances of "Land of the Lost," "Stand Back," "Going Down," and many more awesome tracks from their album Sunlight, as well as others. These guys are an amazing live act, and are a must see whenever possible! Look out for their Meteor City debut coming soon, as Freedom Hawk have a bright future ahead of them.

Jersey's own (Damn) This Desert Air kept the energy going with a ripping set that took me right back to the glorious days of the 90s. Playing with a heavier tone than what they've recorded, the songs are intricate with both heavy and delicate passages mixing in perfect harmony. Their years of experience are evident with strong vocals that capture your attention, and a tight band that sounds as though they've been playing together for ages. Performing all four tracks from their future legendary debut EP, plus four others from the upcoming album, (D)TDA showed off both sounds old and new. "Ghost I Own," one of the new songs caught me in particular, and I'm highly anticipating their album's release.

Gravehaven made the trip down from Boston, and it was not a quick one. With the highway being tied up with traffic and horrid weather, the band made it just in time to rock The Delancey with full bombastic force. If you haven't ever seen Gravehaven live, do so immediately. These guys play with such well timed precession, mixing aggression, prog, melodic beauty, and rhythmic excellence. Playing songs from Calico including "The Mirror," "Lunatic," and "Breach," Gravehaven also performed stunning new tracks that will sure to create another incredible offering in the near future.

Boston's Hazard Adams came to have a good time, and a good time was had by all. Opening with a powdery tribute to this year's NBA MVP Lebron James,Hazard Adams played songs off their upcoming EP "Tongue Tied White Lies," as well as old favorites. Always out to please the audience, they also threw in some covers from Ryan Adams and Wilco, to a mid song breakdown during "The Hell Song" into Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire". With a constantly improving live show, the band showcased their diversity with the closing trio of songs. "Block House Lights" is a swampy Zeppelin-esque ride, "When I Needed You" is slow burning build to chaos, and "Time to be Wrong" is a quirky country blues ditty, all played with the energy and excitement Hazard Adams is known for.

The New Regime Lets You Make Him Tour

A message from The New Regime...

"A few days ago I started thinking about what I wanted to do when the current NIN tour came to an end. I realized that it would be the perfect time to take The New Regime music to a live format and finally play some shows. To get some feedback on the prospect of touring I asked the following question via Twitter: "If I decided to tour with The New Regime in the fall, who would come?". I didn't exactly expect the reaction I got, but I was EXTREMELY pleased with it. So the next step was to figure out how to take this project that I started by myself and take it on the road continuing to things my way, DIY, and finance it all. Then I remembered all the times I had been asked "When will you release Coup on CD?" since it came out online last November.

The reason why Coup was released digitally was because it made the most sense at the time. Although I was proud of my first ten songs, I didn't have very big expectations for it. So spending money on 5,000 CD's that could've very well spent the rest of time sitting in my garage if no one liked it seemed like a real waste.

Here's what I'm thinking now...

I'm thinking about putting together a really special physical release. 1 package, 1 price, with the potential following items (give or take):
-DVD with live performances, out-takes, whatever else I can scrape up
-Booklet with live/recording photos taken by two of my good friends.
-Limited edition, Hand Numbered, and signed by me (if that somehow sweetens the deal?)
-Maybe some other goods.

I'm open to ideas which is where you come in.

All the capital raised from sales of this package will go to finance The New Regime on tour.

I'm completely thinking out loud here and want your input. By messages of sorts, tweets, emails, comments, phone calls, morse code, whatever works, let me know who's into this. I want to get moving as soon as possible.

Thank you,

Nebula Brings Out Entrance Band!

California's NEBULA have announced a full US tour that begins in August.

The tour will be in support of the band's new LP, Heavy Psych, due out July 7th on Tee Pee Records. Nebula will be joined by THE ENTRANCE BAND, who will be fresh off a tour supporting SONIC YOUTH.

Playing dirty rock and roll and primitive blues, psychedelic iconoclasts Nebula have earned a reputation as one of the most influential bands to emerge from the Los Angeles underground rock scene of the last two decades.

With a penchant for Fuzz-wah pedals, wild drums and debauchery, Nebula plays feedback-heavy, guitar-driven psychedelic rock in the tradition of THE STOOGES, MC5, JIMI HENDRIX and CREAM - laced with the spaced out sounds and dischord of SPACEMAN 3 and THE VELVET UNDERGROUND.

Formed by frontman Eddie Glass out of the ashes of FU MANCHU upon the bands split in 1997, Nebula toured relentlessly in North America, Europe, Japan and Australia, playing alongside bands like MUDHONEY, IGGY AND THE STOOGES, LOCAL H, THE HELLACOPTERS and QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE.

Nebula quickly gained a cult following in the burgeoning psych scene that was taking root in their hometown of Los Angeles and in music scenes abroad, paving the way for bands like BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, DEAD MEADOW, BLACK ANGELS and WOLFMOTHER.

In 2009, Nebula joined Tee Pee Records for the release of their latest LP, Heavy Psych. The new line up includes Eddie Glass on guitar/vox, Tom Davies (bass/vox), and Rob Oswald on drums.

Combining the combustibility of the sun with the mysticism of the moon, Heavy Psych lives up to its name, no matter your preferred definition, and reaffirms Nebula's reputation as one of rock's brightest stars in this galaxy or any other.

The Flaming Lips Bring Guests

[Pitchfork.com] So we've got that potentially amazing girl-with-beard cover (still unconfirmed). Lots of talk about how this is going to be the Flaming Lips' return to weird. And now we get news that both MGMT and Karen O are set to make very special appearances on the Flaming Lips' upcoming double album, Embryonic, according to an interview with Wayne Coyne himself on Swiss website Die Klangschau.

"We have MGMT doing a song with us and we have Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs doing a couple songs with us," said the Wayner. "For the Karen O tracks, I just called her up in her hotel room and we just did it right over the telephone. It's pretty absurd." (Insert "phoning it in" joke here.)

No word on what these featured players are doing on the record, exactly, but I'm hoping for screams, yelps, and squiggles. You can listen to the whole interview HERE.

And if those high profile guests are too flashy for you, Coyne added: "We have this weird mathematician guy from Germany doing some spoken word stuff on the record." A good look for Pythagorean theorem fans.

In related news, Oklahoma's finest are prepping a digital EP for some of the freaks who buy tickets to their summer tour, which includes a stop at something called the Pitchfork Music Festival.

Doolittle In Europe

[Pitchfork.com] As previously reported, the Pixies will drop their outrageously lavish Minotaur box set this fall. The set will collect all the band's studio albums and include all sorts of sumptuous artwork, but it won't squeeze in any bonus tracks or even a remastering job. The implication, it seems, is that the Pixies' albums are sacred.

And now NME reports and the band's reps confirm that the Pixies will continue to celebrate one of those albums, 1989's Doolittle, when they tour Europe in October. At these shows, the band will play every song from Doolittle, along with all the associated B-sides. And you know what that means: "Debaser", "Here Comes Your Man", "La La Love You", "Gouge Away". Doolittle turns 20 this year, after all. It's almost old enough to buy beer!

In a statement, frontman Black Francis had this to say: "We wanted to do something special for Doolittle's 20th anniversary, and we thought this was a good opportunity to play all of the songs from that album, something we don't normally do at a regular gig."
