The Austinist has featured Battleme, the solo project from LIONS Matt Drenik...
[austinist.com] What’s the Deal: Austin’s riff-heavy and explosive rock outfit, Lions, are doing well these days. And now, Matt Drenik has another reason to be optimistic. His solo acoustic side project Battleme has only just started to gain steam, and he’s already secured TV show placement. There’s a definite likeness here to Ben Bridwell’s vocals from Band of Horses, higher pitched and echoing as if in a great hall. But, the addition of a dash of southern folk in Battleme sets Drenik far enough apart.
Battleme’s song “Burn This Town” was featured on an episode of the FX show about an outlaw biker gang called “Sons of Anarchy” in the second season. The song also appears on an EP for the show available now. It’s a calm acoustic number with Drenik’s voice echoing and drifting easy on the breeze while he’s singing, “I’m gonna burn the town/ If you lie to me” in an eerily easy going way. Drenik’s tune “Dead Man” is equally morose. There’s something in the charm and infectiousness of these songs that makes their lasting impression not one of depression, but rather calm.
