[Pitchfork.com] Tentacle-armed Hella drummer Zach Hill is an absolute technical beast and a serious stage presence, so it probably shouldn't surprise anyone to learn that he is a very capable guy. But five albums in one year? Plus touring? Plus more Hella action around the corner? That is ridiculous. Indie rock drummers, you are officially put on notice. Zach Hill is on his grind, and he's probably willing to replace you if the rest of your band decides they don't like you.
We already reported that Hill had teamed up with Prefuse main man Guillermo Scott Herren to form the duo Diamond Watch Wrists, whose pretty-good-so-far debut Ice Capped at Both Ends is due via Warp on May 5. We also reported that Hill is beating up drums for the Mars Volta's Omar Rodriguez-Lopez in el Grupo Nuevo de Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, whose first album, Cryptomnesia, will also come out May 5 on Rodriguez-Lopez's new label Rodriguez-Lopez Productions. That's two albums in one day! Ice Capped at Both Ends and Cryptomnesia are Zach Hill's Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II.
But those two albums make up less than half of Hill's planned 2009 output. Next up: Bygones, Hill's new duo with Nick Reinhart, guitarist for hyperactive Californian math-rockers Tera Melos. Sargent House will release By-, the first Bygones album, on June 23. (I guess the second album will be called Gones.)
Here's the cover, featuring Amber Coffman of Dirty Projectors. It is making me want lunch:
Later this summer, Porter plans to release Aggressively Humble, the debut from Hill's new trio CHLL PLL. The other members of the group: Zac Nelson of Prints and Hexlove, and Zachariah Dellorto Blackwell of Danava. Clearly, this band should've been called the Zack Attack, but I guess that was taken.
Finally, Hill will somehow find time later this year to record Face Tat, his second solo album. Scott Herren will produce and co-write, and Hill expects to have it out by the end of the year, because he is a crazy man.
Hella, now back down to a duo after adding more members on recent albums, will also release an album sometime early in 2010. I don't know why they don't just go ahead and drop that one this year as well.
Also on Hill's itinerary: A solo set at the Breeders-curated All Tomorrows Parties weekend in May, a Diamond Watch Wrists U.S. tour in July, and a Bygones tour in late summer and early fall. Hill will probably also drum for Marnie Stern on her forthcoming European dates. Yikes. At this rate, Hill's probably going to need to clone himself like Michael Keaton in Multiplicity pretty soon.
