The South By Southwest Festival (SXSW) is an annual music conference that takes place every March in Austin, Texas. It is often the jumping point for many new bands gaining their "break" into the industry, and always has an exceptional amount of good music. I wont be attending SXSW unfortunately, but I can't help but be excited for a lot of these bands. This year is no exception to that, and I wanted to highlight some of the most exciting performances announced so far...
EXPLODING IN SOUND's Guide to SXSW:
* Operahouse - This is one of those bands that I can't possibly say enough about. Since the first time I heard them I became a believer that this band will have a long and successful career. SXSW marks their USA debut, and lets hope they make it over to New York while in the States!
* Adam Franklin (Swervedriver/Magnetic Morning) - The former Swervedriver singer/guitarist is ready for another busy year. Magnetic Morning (his collaboration with Interpol's drummer) is available now, and he should have a new solo album out by the time SXSW rolls around. I'm sure his live show is nothing to miss.
* Sons of Albion - This hard rock band from London will also be making their debut in U.S. soil. These guys are poised to do big things with their music, and while they don't exploit it...it doesn't hurt that singer Logan Plant is the legendary Robert Plant's son.
* Dredg - It's Dredg!! What more do I need to say? Already a highly established act, not to mention one of my all time favorite bands, seems odd to have them playing SXSW, but hey...why not? Their live show is beautiful, heavy, and artistic. Prepare to be amazed.
* Rival Schools - The reunion continues. Now if they would just announce the recording of a new album and a national tour I could fully embrace how great their return is!
* Superdrag - Returning with their original lineup for the first time in over a decade, Superdrag will be releasing their new album right around the same time. Power pop fans rejoice!
* The Life & Times - Fresh off their New Year's shows with Hum, Allen Epley (Shiner) and company get ready to release their highly anticipated new album "Tragic Boogie" in April by warming up at SXSW.
* These Arms Are Snakes - The big stars of the Suicide Squeeze Records showcase, TAAS should be performing like a well oiled machine as they're coming straight from their headlining tour with Clouds and All The Saints. Complex and heavy, they are sure to put on one of the more exciting shows of the festival.
* Here Holy Spain - Fans of the Dallas/Fort Worth grunge bands (Toadies, Baboon, Lions, etc.) will be sure to check out this new promising band from the impecable scene. Playing the Idol Records showcase, look for their debut album, "Manic" due out in March!
* The Black Angels
* CKY - After a lengthy hiatus and band drama, CKY are back. I know I am very curious to see how their time apart and side projects have affected their sound.
* Sebastien Grainger
* The Shaky Hands - Quirky Portland alternative rock/folk/alternative indie band. Can be seen on tour leading into SXSW with the Meat Puppets!
* True Widow - Great new shoegaze band out of Dallas, TX
* Fighting With Wires - Hailing from Northern Ireland, FWW have an interesting mix of Foo Fighters pop rock and random flourishes of At The Drive-In thrown in for good measure.
* General Fiasco
* Kreisor
and most likely more to come...
